Not worth the unending toil at trying to keep it on the road...............

If you buy it, buy a drip tray for your garage floor

Chris.

Reports from plenty of owners, earliest oil leak known is at 3 months

They pride themselves on being hand built, but tolerances are shocking

Most mechanics suggest they are average at best

The worst part - having to wear a flat black half face helmet....oops,
fashion accessory

I would call it considerable. Name one redeeming feature of the Fatboy
beyond pose value. I think you have mistakenly assumed I was referring to
all Harley Davidson's. My comment was directed at the Fatboy and yes, I have
spent a fair amount of time on one BECAUSE MY MATE WHO HAD ONE, HATED RIDING
IT SO MUCH!

I also have a friend who owns a Harley shop, believe me, they laugh at the
posers that ride those things. A lot of them fall off as they pull away from
the pavement for the first time!

I don't want to get into an argument with you <smile> but how much time have
you spent on a Fatboy? How about other Harleys? Of the '98 models he/she
would be better of with a Dyna chassis. I wouldn't buy a softail based bike
(like the Fatboy) until now - they fixed a lot of problems with the '00
model.

Respectfully yours,
Peter

Before you buy a Harley.. Buy some bloody anti virus software. You posted
the Happy99 virus to the group.

That would surprise me. I have had 4 Harleys from a Dyna Wideglide thru to a
100+ hp 1200 Sportster (highly modified) and oil leaks are not something
that I suffered.

Oh, I agee they are not very well built. In fact I had a brand new Dyna
Wideglide replaced at 1,600km. Oil was not the issue though.

Doesn't really matter though Peter, does it?

Buying a motorcycle, any motorcycle is an emotional thing.
If the man wants a Harley, he will buy a Harley. Guess he is just after a
reading on this one. Bit hard from where you and I are, I just wish him luck
with it.
There is no such thing as a bad bike. Some are better than others, and that
is in the eye of the beholder, therefore no-one is right. Thank God there
are different types, styles, bands models etc. Without that the first thing
that would disappear is this newsgroup eh?

Shit, not meant to get philosophical until much later than
this....................

Cheers mate

Zeebee, have you ridden the model he is talking about? I am going offline
now but for the record, I don't have a problem with Harley's in general,
just the Fatboy in particular.

*thinks* Was it a fatboy?

RoadKing, DynaGlide, 2 different Sportsters.

NO, I don;t think I've ridden one.

Is it *that* different from other Hogs? So much so that it doesn't
have any of the good features of any of them?

YMMV.

Simplicity, reliability, good resale value and low running costs.

Seems to me that if I didn't like my bike, I'd sell it.

Yeah, I've heard the same about R1's...

Eight years and 174,900kms on an '86 Softail, which only differs from
a Fatboy in the front end and cosmetics.

I loved it and cherish the memories. 174,000ks, every state and
capital city, the eastermost, westernmost and southernmost points of
the mainland and Tassie, everyday commuter, occasional drag racer and
all rounder par excellence.

If only I could afford another as a second bike to sit beside the
T595...

Fark!! Wish that was the case with my Suzuki. Damned thing is like a
mongrel dog - marks it's sport whenever it stops.

On the bright side, it still goes - and that's all that really matters
sometimes. :)

You are a hero Doug - 174,000 kms on a Softail - Wow!

You must find the Triumph heavenly. I loved my '99 Speed Triple but after a
diet of Ducati's (900SS and 888SP) and Harleys (no softails, but I am no
going to pursue this line) the draw of the V twin was overwhelming and
yesterday I traded it on a 2000 model TLR. I also whacked some yoshi cans on
it for full appreciation of the music.

By the way, what year is the 595 - watch that wiring loom! My Triumph was
the first bike to let me down in 29 years (when my Mach III Kawasaki fouled
the plugs on the way home from school).

Kindly yours,
Peter

Hrmmm I think I'll have to stick my hand up here and say that whilst I like
the rubber glides, the tourers and don't mind the sportsters that the
softtail series (and in particular those with the 16 inch front wheel) don't
do anything for me. Their sole redeeming feature (not shared with other
HD's in the range) is the slightly cleaner looks and for this is traded the
pleasing riding of the other bikes in the range.

Each to their own of course (and they sell on those looks :)
