A great day of racing on the best natural terrain motocross circuit in
Australia saw Number 1 plate holder Warren Carrol dominate the
prestigious 25 lap Laurie Boulter Motocross. Carrol lead from the start
from Dale Newman and a host of other riders.
For the first time in the 45 year history of the Laurie Boulter
Motocross, a father and son team competed. Locals Clyde and Sam Tucker
from Tucker Motorcycles at Mt Barker featured well in the gruelling 25
Lap moto.
There was a strong group of local riders in the field including Atujara
members Brett Metcalf, Ian Richards, Mark Russell, Sly Goyne and Jason
Kane as well as interstate riders such as the hard charging John Prior
from Broken Hill and the sidecar team of Greg and Neale Anthony from the
Korumburra club.
The Hec Henderson Sidecar Derby, held over two legs, saw a great fight
between the Robinson/Oliver team, the Thompson Brothers and the team
of Anthony/Anthony from Victoria. Unfortunately the Thompson's pushed a
little hard, cartwheeling their machine down the hill in spectacular
style,allowing the Robinson/Oliver duo to take a well earned victory.
Resurgence in the dirt bike scene was proven with good fields in the
Enduro and Big Bore classes, with top racing from the likes of Shane
Diener, David Holt and Ian Potts.
The running of the 45th Laurie Boulter Motocross is in the memory of one
of South Australia's great motorcycle riders. Laurie was killed as the
result of a freak accident while representing Australia in the Isle of
Man road race.
1962 saw the introduction of a feature event aimed at presenting sidecar
competitors in their true worth as spectacular crowd pleasers in
Motocross. By donating a trophy to perpetuate the memory of her late
husband and esteemed Atujara member, Hec, Mrs. Henderson revitalised
interest in this exciting branch of the sport. Dave Dyson created
history by winning the inaugural Hec Henderson Sidecar Derby at Port
Norlunga and since then spectactors have been treated to some of the
finest motocross racing in Australia.
