KTM - as I remember is KICK TEN MINUTES

I used to have a hard time starting my KTM 400cc.
Remember my first few days starting the bike, I take
at least TEN MINUTES. I told a friend about me
having to KICK TEN MINUTES b4 the bike starts.
He mentioned KTM stands for KICK TEN MINUTES.

Hello Duke 400cc,

As KTM is situated in Germany the letters KTM stand for:

Kradumbau Tourmaster Marathon

Well, according their website at www.ktm.de

Only an idiot takes so long to start a four-stroke thumper.

You wither do the drill and start it quickly, or you do the drill and
diagnose a real problem when it doesn't start after a few good kicks.

Doing anything else is asinine.

Too true, with my AJS I go through the ritual of petrol on, tickle the
carb, drop the air-slide and then switch on the ignition. Slowly down on
the kick start until the piston reaches TDC and the ammeter is showing a
coupla Amps drain. Then it's up with the valve lifter and ease it over
TDC until no current is being drawn. If any of these ampmeter swings
havn't happened then I already know I'm wasting my time. Then it's a
good progressive swing using body weight and leg muscle to fire the old
girl up. Any slight deviation from the procedure or a hot motor and I
may have a second or third go but if she doesn't start first kick there
is generally summink wrong.

With the AJS this can be a plethora of things but is usually one of:

Dirty or closed points. Blocked pilot jet. Slipped timing. Flat battery.

All easily and very quickly fixed, she does hundreds of miles to the
gallon and is just about fast enough for modern traffic. Stopping in the
same distance as a modern vehicle is a problem!

Tyres last until they perish, chain and sprox are so old I can't
remember when I changed them and the sound of an old single is quite
delightful!!

Get one now, or two or three if you want some spares :-)

I don't know what this is about. After seeing TAZSPAZ's KTM400 at Hollister
this weekend, I think the whole thing about KTM starting problems is a joke.
Kind of like calling the fat guy in the crowd "skinny". To start TAZSPAZ's
KTM400, all you needed to do was look at the kick start lever and "poof" -
off and running. Amazing.

AUSTRIA, The birth place of Hitler, just next door to Germany. Its in
Europe. Where KTM's comes from.

AUSTRIALIA, The birth place of Fosters Beer, and where Kangeros come
from. Its a continent. Where the only home grown motorcycle is a super
bike (and a really great bike) of a name I can remember right now.

Are you thinking of the Britten by any chance? Actually from New
Zealand, but what a beautiful, incredible bike.
I almost cried when I read about John Britten's death. :(

Now for some conspiracy trivia...
There was actually an Austrailian company call Swastika in the teens
and early 20's.

Well, I see you know where Austrialia is and corrected my error too! For
the record, the comment about Hitler is not intended to be a negitive
comment about Austria, just fact. I'm a very loyal KTM rider, too.

I think he's referring to the Drysdale V8. There's a picture of it and

grand conspiracy is coming togeather now....
