My girlfriend Debbi and I are planning a touring holiday on the bike and I'm
looking at maybe buying some hard luggage, primarily for security purposes,
so that when we arrive somewhere to have a bit of a look we can leave the
bike without worrying if someone will take/damage the soft luggage.

Does anyone with a Blackbird have any experience with hard luggage?

I'm looking at getting paniers and a topbox.

I've checked the Givi website and had a bit of a look at their stuff. So far
I'm not sure which of the racks is required for the Blackbird, the Monorack
and panier holders or the Wingrack. Can anyone help with this? The other
thing is that Debbi finds the single grab handle on the CBR uncomfortable to
hold, so she uses the frame of the Ventura rack that I have on the bike.
With the Givi racks can the pillion hold onto them comfortably?

Any info on Givi or other brands of hard luggage would be greatly
appreciated.

Yeah, I've heard that claiming your topbox on your blackbird isn't
closed properly is a good excuse to use for not keeping up with a Spada
thru Horrocks Gap...

The mono rack holds the top box only. The wingrack will allow you to
carry the panniers and the topbox. I have both, I only put the
wingrack on for longer trips and use just the monorack and topbox for
overnighters and running around town.
The Givi rack and luggage are superb, however you do pay for what you
get. It's not cheap. Expect to pay up to $2,000 for the monorack,
wingrack, two panniers and a topbox (if you go the whole hog). About
1/3 rd of that will get you a Ventura rack, bag and some decent throw
over panniers. Of course these don't have the convenience of
lockability etc. and it can be a pain trying to dig through bags
looking for things that aren't right at the top when you're standing
on the side of the road.

I've only had one pillion on my bike while I've had the wingrack
fitted and didn't hear any complaints about comfort but since we were
following a van which contained the bike he'd just thrown against a
mountain it probably wasn't the most uncomfortable event in his recent
memory :) A topbox with a padded pillion backrest will probably make
life a lot easier on the pillion's hands.

A few years ago I had a CBR11 with the Hepco and Becker panniers that honda
supply, the rack was modified to be fitted with a ventura rack in place.
This gave me the 2 lockable panniers and a large gearsack back on the back.
The system worked quite well except when I forgot they were on and started a
lane split in melbourne (they stuck out like prince charlies ears) . From
memory the panners (45L each from memory) and rack cost about 1100 from
honda

I've got the Givi rack and a Givi top box.
I couldn't be happier with the set up. The rack looks pretty good on the BB and the lockable box which turns into a case clips on
and off
with no trouble at all. I'm still amazed at what can fit into it too. All up I think rack and box cost around $700.00 ish but check
out web sites. You notice it's there for the first 5 minutes it's ever on and then you totally forget it's there (Fancy dismounts at
the cafe hitting it with your leg) attend to that. Putting them on turned my bike into a real sports tourer.

www.nonfango.it

Yes, my friend in the US has just bought his second XX and I have ordered a
set of Nonfango racks to suit it (the last ones died a horrible death here
in oz with the bike). I prefer Nonfango over Givi as they are heaps cheaper
and are a better build. I have had the setup on a VFR800.

The best panniers are the 'Tutto' setup, which are quite aerodynamic and
don't upset the bike.

Tell him to order his own.
It's not like he is using up all his time riding :)

Nev,

How long does it take to mount the rack and remove it if you don't want to
use it all the time. How much does it affect the handling at higher speeds.
Also does anyone know any suppliers in Sydney for Givi Boxes/Racks.

Thanks

It takes 30-45 mins to put the wingrack on/off, that includes removing
the rear indicators and connecting up the indicators which are on the
rack (on the later model XXs you'll have to change the wiring plugs
for the rear indicators from the standard too.) The handling of the
bike hardly changes at all. After about 30 seconds with the rack and
panniers on I don't even notice the extra weight on the bike. The
Honda manual states that you should never exceed 130kph with luggage
on the bike, but it handles fine well past the double ton :) The
front end does tend to get a bit light and shake with both hands off
the bars at low speeds, but it does that with any luggage on the back,
not just the Givi.

The wiring Plugs? Do they come with the rack or are they a Honda part. I
have a 2002 Black Blackbird. Does the box / panniers colour code to the
factory paintwork?

My bike is still at the repairers after someone ran up the back of me, hope
to have it back within a week. Miss riding so much. Been caged since just
before Christmas.

Honda use a little proprietary connector to connect the indicators to
the wiring loom. The wingrack has it's own indicators (because you
must remove the factory indicators to fit the rack) and these have a
different type of connector. The simplest solution I found was to
remove all connectors for the rear indicators and change them all over
to the same style of connector.

Check the Givi website... www.givi.it i think it is
