At least getting the engine out allowed me to clean her up a bit... I even
painted some engine bits to give the 'ol black maggot a more personal
touch... stay tuned for pics of the first black CX500 with "ford light blue"
valve covers, starter motor and carby lids!

After 7 hours effort on Sunday I got the motor back into my VT500, and
went for a little spin to fill it up. Why did it take 7 hours, I hear
you ask?
* Unlike a CX, you have to remove the radiator;
* The engine has been out of the bike for 6 months, which gave me
plenty of time to forget;
* After 4 hours I got the motor back in and the dozens of cables and
hoses reconnected, only to discover that I should have fitted the
universal joint to the motor splines before putting the engine back in
the frame;
* Caught myself looking around for a big hammer at this point, so I
took The Jackal for a fang around the Cotter loop instead ;-);
* Got home, made the appropriate tool and removed the swingarm;
* Discovered that the swingarm couldn't be refitted with the uni joint
in place;
* Caught myself looking around for a big hammer, etc;
* Did a little angle grinder surgery to a nonessential "lip" on the
frame, and managed to refit the swingarm;
* Put the final drive, rear wheel, etc. back in place, fired her up
and went for a ride.
Then yesterday I went to work via the Cotter road for running-in
purposes, and got a flat rear tyre in the hill above the pub. Managed
to get it down to the carpark before the tyre popped off the bead (it
was worn out and due to be replaced THAT DAY!) After a bit of pain
and a 10km walk I got it home again on the trailer, via the bike shop
for a new tyre.
The tenuous link with this thread is that I cured the nasty oil leak
from the front rocker cover with copious quantities of silastic. ;-)
Incidentally Gouch, do you have any recommended paractices for bedding
in new piston rings?
