Hello peoples, My son took my DRZ400 riding without asking me. I am going to
choke him when he gets back....if he gets back....
He thought he was doing the right thing and 'topped up' the oil. Apparrently
'It was empty'. Grrr. He doesn't know it has a dry sump. It was ridden last
week. What damage can be done by overfilling it?
Signed, one pissed off dad.

Hello one pissed off dad :)

I have to ask... how does one check and top up a dry sump motor?

By checking the oil tank (some have dipsticks, others a strip-type
sightglass) while the motor's running. NB: Need to have the motor
running for a little while, to give the scavenge pump time to bale all
the pooled oil from the bottom of the cases into the oil tank.

To the OP: Unless the kid's been a real 'tard and put an extra 2L of oil
in, there's not likely to be much harm. The scavenge pump will just keep
the oil tank considerably fuller than it otherwise would be... he still
deserves to be fired arse-first from a catapult for taking the bike
without asking, mind you.

Thanks for the comments. After I blasted the crap out of him when he got
back, he told me he added about 3 to 400 mls. I showed him the owners manual
where it has a small diagram of how it works. I suppose it was luky that a
lot of the oil was still in the frame and hadn't all drained down into the
sump after last weeks ride. No signs of damage. I think we got away with it.
He's not getting away with taking it without asking though....I wonder how
he'll respond when I tell him I gave away his ticket I was going to give him
to see the Crusty Demons show.. (just kidding).
Thanks again,
Trev
