What: Optus News Server removal
When:
Duration:
Impact: Optus has previously provided usenet service (Optus Newsgroup)
to customers. However, following evaluation of the services that we
offer to our customers, and the declining usage of usenet by our
customers over the past several years, it is no longer viable to
continue to provide this service. As a result, the usenet service is in
the process of being disabled and removed. This service will close as of
21/11/2011. If you still want to use usenet, there are a number of
commercial usenet providers that will be able to provide this service to
you.

I guess there are other ISPs as well. I think we're out of contract.
Time to wander through whirlpool again?

Bloody hell. Usenet servers run themselves. All you need is a spare
486 and a few tens of GB of disk.

Stupid ISPs.

Anyway, internode may be your friend. I can't see them giving up on
usenet anytime soon.

I may be mistaken, but AFAIK Telstra killed their UseNet link quite a while back (February, I think?). They didn't kill the server; they simply killed its peer connections.

> I guess there are other ISPs as well. I think we're out of contract.

You'd have to be pretty silly to use one of the "big" ISPs these days, given their pricing structures.

TPG offer unlimited (as in, no download caps nor throttles ever) ADSL2+ including (if you want) line rental for $60/month, and have their own news servers:
http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/adsl2plus_pricing.php

Exetel offer unlimited (as above) ADSL2+ including line rental for $49/month, but don't have a news server:
http://www.exetel.com.au/business_plan_pricing_new.php

I'll disclose now though that I'm a reseller for TPG, so some might consider this post biased - so do your own due dilligence. I currently have two independent ADSL2+ feeds coming in, one from TPG and one from Exetel, and I can wholeheartedly recommend them both reliability-wise.

+1 for Internode. Good service when things go wrong, with Australian call

I've got a permanent subscription to the italian news server, so that's
fine.
We'll probably stay with Optus, because we have a deal that gives 120G
of data, line rental and lots of included landline calls for $60. I
never use the landline, but SWMBO needs it (she's the last professional
on the planet without a mobile) and a proper fax machine.

I assume Moike is not your worst enemy, but I wouldn't even wish that
upon my own worst enemy. For them, I would reserve Outlook.

Thanks Gerry - after a few false starts I think I've got it sorted now. No

Ah, grasshopper, you have much to learn...

Six to twelve hours before "indulging" with your better half, consume an entire 1.5 litre bottle of cranberry juice.

Then note the volume and duration of the (to use Gerry's paraphrasing) "comings."

This is a trick usually shared only among actors in the adult film industry. Try not to divulge it to too many people.

Now why would I want to induce longcomings? What possible use are
they except for the porn star thing. My fame as a porn star, at
65yoa, cannot possibly last too much longer...

Then again, cranberry joice "with added Viagra" might be a top seller
around the nation's nursing homes... Pity the staff having to wipe
down the walls, or getting used as moving targets by charged-up
Vietnam vets...

I'll get out of your way now...

Hmmm... Maybe they run a separate news server for Telstra customers, and another for all second-tier customers (I'm coming through Exetel, which has a "let our users use your mail server" agreement with Telstra).

Which news server do you connect to? I've just re-connected with reader.news.telstra.net and find that for aus.motorcycles, its entire content is limited to two posts made on the 4th of October.

This post confirms I'm not the only one who's seen emptiness on Telstra's end:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1155218

I noticed for about two weeks back in February that there was absolutely no new content coming into any of the newsgroups, and nor were any of my attempted posts making their way out - so I pointed my news reader elsewhere (AIOE, as it eventuated).

That explains it, then.

Nobody from outside of Telstra's address space can connect to it, so it's only for Telstra internet customer use.
