Travelling north from Flemington to Moonie Valley there is a lane labeled
EL.

Is it an express lane?
Who can travel in this lane?
Can a motor bike travel in this lane?

yep

taxis, cars with 2 or more passengers and motorbikes - I think that's it.
But it only applies during peak hour, can't remember the exact times, it
becomes a normal lane at other times.

Nope... Taxis and Buses only...
It is NOT like the commuter lanes on the Eastern. No bikes, no passenger cars..

however NO ONE pays attention to it whatsoever.. stupid design from the
planners.
just do it

I would think the opposite - you would expect one to become lazy and desensitised
after spending up to 12 hours driving, especially in peak times. You would be so
sick of waiting at lights, giving way, etc you would lose all courtesy and respects
for others. Sad, but true.

As for Citylink, I thought the EL lanes act as normal outside peaktimes. Then again
no one obeys them anyway... impulsive drivers simply can't tolerate not changing
into an apparently faster lane.

well, I live in the bush and when I come down to the city, I ride / drive in
those lanes, it's good, there are hardly any other cars using it, I get to
where I want to go much quicker.
I have always been called a mexican by the New South Wailians for living in
Victoria, but now it is true, they have the roads named with spanish names,
el road.

Sorry for the wrong info on this, I was on the Tulla tonight and checked out
the signs again - Taxis, buses and emergency vehicles only :{ But only in
peak hour... Dumb idea if you ask me, the way they've done it on the Eastern
is much better!

Eh?

The 'EL' lane in question is the right hand lane, and is set up to give
taxis, buses and emergency vehicles a fast run.

So what's so stupid about taxis using it?

If its taxis sitting in the outer lane on other freeways, whats the
problem? In my experience, if you are passing taxis on the tulla, you
are heading for a speeding fine. These guys don't hang about.

Because it doesnt always give them a faster run than the other lanes because the
freeway is so underutilised..
So you get some of the slower ones (they do exist..they have licences too) doing
100-ish in the right left
Vehicles to their left doing 110.. vehicles behind them doing 120, catching
them, getting into the lane to the left of them, passing them and getting back
into to the right lane...
then as they get to Flem Rd they slow a bit and move across 2 lanes to get into
the off ramp, while faster cars come up behind them..
Irregardless of speed or EL signs or whatever the safest (practical) road system
has the slowest vehicles on the left and getting progressively faster to the
right in a disciplined manner...(unless you're in the US or Europe)
I agree with the original respondant that the EL lane makes the whole thing
messy...

EL lane is only a few K's in distance, taxis sit in that lane most the
way along the tulla.

If you are passing a taxi means the dickhead did not move out the
way (not the EL lane which is only for taxis etc for few hrs in peak
hr)

I wish you wouldn't call non-metro regions/areas as "the bush". I find
the term demeaning to those of us who live in rural and regional towns
and cities. Bendigo, Ballarat, Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Warragul,
Wangaratta and the like are hardly places that I'd describe as "bush".

When the media paints places outside of Melbourne, Sydney and the like
as "the bush", I get the feeling that they think that we still
communicate via bush telegraph, that we have the one general store where
we ride into, once a fortnight to get our supplies, and that we run
diesel generators for electricity, pump water out of bores, have a
copper for hot water (anyone here old enough to recognise what I'm
talking about here?) and so on, and that the media is putting this
picture of "bush life" over onto the "city slickers" of Melbourne and
other state capitals.

Sorry to rant on, but the way that non-metro areas are dismissed as
being irrelevant by the media and city people in general, is a sore
point with me.

I missed this one. What lane(s) are you talking about and what are the
limitations as far as bikes go? Does it mean that buses etc. can only
use them in peak hour, and no other times, or can all vehicles use them
except for peak hour when it's restricted to buses, etc.?

Sorry to sound dumb. Long day, late, and I'm about ready for bed, I
think...

In peak hour, EL lanes are ONLY for taxi, bus, etc... ie no cars or bikes.
Luckily for me I travel in the opposite direction and grin as I watch the slow
grind of traffic exiting at Flem Rd... poor bastards.

Not in my experience. Don't ride in the right hand land because of
Taxi Drivers thinking the Speed Limit is 80 and absolutely refuse to
budge. Even kicking a mirror off doesn't help.....

The Eastern Freeway is similar. The left-hand service lane is only
for Buses, Taxis and Emergency Vehicles during peak hour. Stuffs up
the buses when someone has actually broken down though!

I have to take someone to Melbourne Airport in a coupla weeks. Does this
mean, then, that the You Beaut Citylink still hasn't solved the
"carpark" problem that Jeff promised to get rid of (going by signs
posted around the South Eastern Freeway a few years ago..)

Do you mean to say that there is other ways of heating your bath water
besides the copper?
and what is this general store bullshit?, our general store closed down over
15 years ago, now all we are left with is four great fucking wheat silos
that stand out like dog's balls, but you know when you see them, that it is
only five minutes to home
and would you consider 275 kilometres from Melbourne far enough away to be
called the bush or not?
I know that it is a fucking long way for a beer, but done that many times
over.
You lot down around Gippsland don't know what travelling is 10 kilometres
to one town, 15 kilometres to another, bugger all travel, I have to ride 20
kilometres just to get the mail and papers, no wonder I am illiterate, by
the time that I have forked out for juice to get back, I cant afford to buy
the paper, but at least I know almost off by heart, some of the names in the
regional telephone book, I say some of them because the old man keeps
ripping the pages off one by one to wipe his arse, before I can remember
them

Actually, the "Transit Lane" (TL - just to be confusing) on the Eastern Fwy
is for buses, taxis, motorbikes, and any vehicle carrying two or more people
(i.e. more than just the driver) - between (IIRC) 7am and 9:30am weekdays.
Even with all those, it's still faster than the other lanes in the morning.
And it's quite heavily policed - this morning there were three police
vehicles (including a bike) pulling people over for driving alone in that
lane. Perhaps the cops thought a bit of company would be appreciated?

On a related note - I've noticed a new trick used for unmarked cars. Instead
of placing the rear lights on the rear deck and being fairly easily seen,
they are in the middle (vertically) of the rear windscreen, behind those
nice shadecloth-type suction cup sun screens. Tricky buggers. Next they'll
be using a brick red Ford ute to lull us into a false sense of security -
oh, wait - they already do that.

Phew, that was longer than I'd thought!
Simon.

Yes, you're right. The Transit Lane is the right hand lane on the
Eastern. I was talking about the service lane on the left hand side,
for buses and taxis only.

Most of the taxis I have followed this week on this section of road are doing about 10 kph under the speed limit. It is frustrating. Wish they would get out of the way but it is technically their lane.....
