It is with great sadness I have to pass on to all of you that Darren
Bokenham passed away on a ride yesterday in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

Darren was riding with a group of friends and we were returning to Canungra
via the Clagiraba Road at Mount Nathan. He was in good spirits, we had had a
great day and were looking forward to having a drink and a chat when we got
home.

The media has reported the accident and as usual some details may be
inaccurate, or sensationalised.

Darren passed away quickly and was surrounded with his friends doing their
best for him.

Rest in peace Darren.

I guess that's all any of us could hope for, under those unfortunate
circumstances.

Darren could've represented Australia if the Olympics had a "good bloke"
competition.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Thanks for advising us Chris, and for helping him and his family.

Boky... your natural good natured, easy going personality made you a
face we always looked forward to seeing at the Supers or GP get
togethers at Phillip Island. You always had a smile or a helping hand
waiting.

The house won't be the same next time without you, nor will IRC, the

Just thought I would post and let you know that we'll be staying at The
Center Point (07) 4661 3488 $68single/$79double (+$11pp additional).

I called tonight and booked us a room with a few extra beds incase people
turn up who haven't got rooms - or are happy to bunk with us. Just a word
of warning - we've got a 3 month old who'll be there too - hopefully she'll
continue with the sleeping through and she wont be a problem, but there's
always the chance....

Anyways, we have 4 single beds in the apartment (apparently two rooms - one
room has a queen bed and a single - the other room has three singles).

They have the largest carpark which is why we are staying there... We'll be
there Thursday night and Friday night - leaving Saturday to drop people back
in Brissy before we head back up to Gladstone.

Let me know if anyone needs help getting from brissy airport to warwick
(although space in the Prado may be limited....)

If you're thinking of Flying to Brisbane, please DO NOT ARRIVE LATER
THAN 7:00. It's a three hour drive to Warwick, and the funeral starts
at 11. I'll be picking up anyone who wants to be picked up (call me,
0402-077-155, and warn me that you're coming) on friday morning, and
you'll be back in Brisbane at 12pm on Saturday. These are the flights
to get! Seating is limited in the Prado, so if you do want a lift,
please call us ASAP!

Also note that Brisbane airport is miles away from anything even
slightly interesting, and it's about a $10 taxi fare just to get out of
the airport area. So don't get too excited about going and seeing
brisvegas unless you budget another 1/2 hour each way for travelling to
and from the city.

For the Sydneysiders:

GS is riding up from VIC on Wednesday, he will be meeting Jase and Marko at
Goulbourn, then riding to my place for some kip and beers

Thursday morning
0600 we are leaving, from blacktown, will fuel up at Macgraths Hill Mobil
(couple kays past the maccas) and head to singleton via the putty, meeting
Pisshead on the way. then proceeding up the New England, eventually to
Warwick, possibly with some side road diversions to break up the monotony
but no thoughts on this as we need to cover some ground.

Were all booked at the same motel listed above

If anyone else from Sydney who is riding up, or indeed driving, you're more
than welcome to join us

We should be at the Mcgraths Hill Mobil.......roughly 0630 id say, and we
wont be hanging around long.

If youre coming along we will see you there

Oh shit!

Rest In Peace, Darren.

I met Darren on the Putty Rd ride, Sat 23rd June, 2001. And he took
those great pics on the Kangaroo Valley ride a fortnight later. Two
rides I will never forget.

Darren was a good bloke. This is very sad news indeed.

I might finally get to meet you up there.

I think I'll go up with the Sydney group.

I remember chatting with him on the Kangaroo Valley ride when he took
that pic of my R80, and I always had him slotted in my memory as one
of ausmoto's good guys.

Even though I barely knew him, I feel the need to go up there to pay
my respects. I don't know why. I just feel I should try to do this.
It's about paying respects.

I can imagine how much greater the grief must be for those who
_really_ knew him.

Well I can't claim to be in that group either Gerry.
I've known Boky since (I think) the first aus.moto national dinner (about
'98?) and I've only met up with him a dozen-or-so occasions since then but
he was that kind of bloke that he made you feel like you were his "mate"
even if you weren't really....

He was the last aus.motian to see gNat & I before we crashed (coming home
from the latest GP) and he was the first to see me (and offer help) as I
was limping home after the crash.
He was also very kind to gNat in hospital (as were many aus.motians).

Boky was coming to my house after the ride and we'd set 4 places at the
dinner-table.
We didn't even end up cooking the dinner and that 4th place-setting was an
open wound all evening... (until Michelle removed it and then it's ABSENCE
was equally as upsetting!)

gNat and I had chickened out and came home after we got to Mudgereeba (as
it was an unpleasantly hot day) so our last memory of Darren is him waving
and yelling "see you later on" as we rode off.

See you later Boky, mate.

My first memory of Boky was outside Sophias in Camberwell. That red VFR,
that loud pipe, that gawd aweful screen, that smile and that laugh of Daz's.

BRIGHT!

Take care of yourself, Boky. You are a gentleman.

Boky was a good mate and he'll be very sadly missed by many. Annette
and I were honoured to have him as best man at our wedding back in
March. Over the last few years we've had quite a few adventures
together and I've basically thought of him as the brother I never had.
It crushes me that we won't get to share the adventures we'd planned
for the future.

He doesn't leave a wife or kids, but we went to Oktoberfest this year
and he met a nice girl there, and things seemed to be going well on
that front. He was one of the very few genuinely honest and reliable
people I've ever met. Countless people on ocau.mc, ozvfr and ausmoto
have stories of Boky being the one who stayed behind to help when they
crashed, who gave them a lift when they needed one, or just offering
friendly, ego-free advice about the technique or philosophy of riding.
So many great moments and memories are preserved in his photos.

He enriched a lot of our lives with his presence and I truly feel
we'll be forever changed by his absence. We should all be so lucky, to
go quickly, doing something we love, surrounded by friends.

RIP mate. You won't be forgotten.

Have now read the courier mail and gold coast paper reports - which
contradict each other (one says the oncoming car was stationary, the
other says it was moving).

Never seen Boky ride beyond his capability (which was pretty high),
details in the G.C paper sound unlikely to me.

Please don't be a pedant about my one line summary.

I think it's pretty clear what I meant. One says oncoming car (implying
moving) one says stationary car on the opposite side of the road or

Does go to show that it can happen to anyone... No idea what "lost

Suggest you consider going up Thunderbolt's / Bucketts way (from
Singleton to Dungog Gloucester Walcha Uralla) and rejoin the New
England at Uralla - it's quicker 'cos there's fewer towns and a more
pleasant run (and a decreased chance of having a chat with the boys in blue)

Isn't it, just? Apart from tagging that "s" onto the end of Chris'
surname, not much you can fault in it.

> Does go to show that it can happen to anyone...
> No idea what "lost control" means beyond the obvious.

Generic statement, isn't it. If someone comes unstuck, by definition,
they've lost control, regardless of whether control's been sntached away
from them or if they gave that control away through making a mistake.

That seems possible... if the box had seized up I'd expect that there
would have been rear skid marks and possibly even a high side rather
than the low side people have described.

Whereas a loss of drive could cause a bike to start running wide, which
would require a sudden increase in lean angle leading to a possible low
side situation...

Guess we'll never really know :-/

I spoke to Chris about that, he was pretty clear that boky's (very
distinctive and easy-to-hear!) engine note was constant before the
crash, not the sudden rev or drop you'd expect if he'd gotten a bonus
neutral. Chris also mentioned he thought he felt a little something
when braking to a stop, so maybe a surface issue. But really, nobody
knows except boky, and maybe not even him - there's been plenty of
mystery crashes over the years, I had one myself not long ago.

You'd certainly have to put your money on it NOT being boky's mistake
though, based on his almost spotless history. But we're all human, as
this week in particular has demonstrated, and I'm sure if he'd
survived, boky would have been the first to admit if it was a mistake
on his part. But we'll never know.

(sorry to quote you if it's inappropriate, chris, but wanted to clear
up things based on more firsthand info.)

I'm in the same situation

Next friday is the single worst possible time for me to get a day off, a
week earlier or later and I could do it, but I've made commitements on
that day.

would it be appropriate for those of us that can't make it to get
together somewhere for a beer and a memorial bullshiting session.

I couldn't have described Darren better if I'd tried, so I won't.

I don't think I ever went riding with Darren. I knew him via IRC and
various social occasions, mostly superbike and grand prix weekends, so
after I heard the bad news one of the first thoughts which sprang to
mind was "now who is going to document the drunken ausmoto weekends at
Phillip Island?"
. Noone else seemed to be able to capture the mood in pictures the way
he could and it seemed the only time he put the camera down was to pick
up his drink.

Unfortunately, though I have the time to get to Warwick for Friday's
service, I had already made commitments to be in Adelaide for that
weekend, so perhaps if anyone else in Adelaide wants to get together say
about 11am on Friday morning, somewhere cool and shady, we can drink a
few cold ones for Boky.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~daniel54/map.jpg
Was from the last run i did from raymond terrace ---> walcha.
I did that run marked in green about 12months ago, gloucester roads are
pretty bumpy and the start of the thunderbolts road surface wasnt all that
good either, although very scenic and it improves later on.
PS there is fuel available at Nowendoc also - its about halfway between
Gloucester and Walcha a couple of clicks off the main drag (signposted well)

That's pretty much spot-on, but we're saving that one, and others, for

Yup. My plans b) and c) would both have us join Thunderbolts between
Stroud and Stroud Road. We'd come in from Singleton along the back roads.

That looks like a pretty old map you've overlaid your route on, too; the
Taree and Raymond Terrace bypasses aren't even on it, nor is the road
we're hoping to take from East Gresford to Dungog :)

Between my road atlas and Google Earth, I can't quite figure out whether
the Singleton-East Gresford-Dungog road runs through mountains or along
the foothills of them. When you say "heaps tighter", just how tight are
we talking about? Canyon-section-of-the-Putty-tight, or
Kiandra-Cabramurra-tight?

Myeah, even that could be debatable. From Shad's to the start of the
Putty, it's a 15 minute ride to Windsor, whereafter we can actually get
a bit of a pace on. To get to the start of the F3, it would take us
40-45 minutes easy, with all the lights.

Yeah pretty old map unfortunatly its the best I had on short stick to put
online - The road from East Gresford to Dungog would be "Bingleburra Rd" I
think? if you reload the map Ive drawn it in there (in pretty pink) it comes
out just north of Dungog. (taken from my newer improveder map book I have)

Mhm, and an eye-catching pink it is, too.

I'm thinking a splitter group'll probably form at Singleton.

> Blacktown to Warwick via Putty and the boring way - 10.5 hrs
> Blacktown to Warwick via F3 and Thunderbolts - 11 hrs
> Blacktown to Warwick via Putty and Thunderbolts - 13 hrs

Itinerary, by my calcs, would be.

1. McGraths Hill-Singleton, 180km, 2hrs (fuel, 20mins)
2. Singleton-Gloucester, 131km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, 20mins)
3. Gloucester-Walcha, 147km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, 20mins)
4. Walcha-Glen Innes, 165km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, food, 45mins)
5. Glen Innes-Tenterfield, 91km, 45mins (fuel for the peanut-tanked, 15mins)
6. Tenterfield-Warwick, 112km, 1hr

Total, 826km, 8hrs 15mins riding, 2hrs in breaks, 2hrs for Murphy

Say 12hrs 30mins. Pretty spot on, Pete.

Leaving at 6:30 and taking the last option gets us into Warwick at 7:00.
Just as the arvo heat is starting to die down. An hour to check in and
shower, and we're in the pub by 8:00. Just as the sky starts turning dark.

This tragic news is not how anyone should have to see out the year. I didn't
know him, but in the playground of aus.moto, we are rarely more than one
degree of separation from the best of mates. From all accounts he was a top
bloke, and we are all the poorer for his passing. It just goes to show how
tenuous is our grip on life via those two tiny rubber patches.
