I am considering buying a Que external firewire DVD-Ram unit to go with my
G4 PCI

I note the G4 PCI architecture is very similiar to the B&W Yosemite and
therefore there might be a bridging problem and also I have read on
Xlr8yourmac.com that some have had issues with using OSX apps with this
machine with AGP G4s.

A recent report stated that 10.1.5 may have fixed many of these issues, at
least in an AGP, but what about the PCI?

If not, is it possible to Hexedit one of the existing OSX drivers?

Does iDVD even work with external burners?

Can anyone advise of their experience with a Que firewire drive (in OS9
and/or OSX) or otherwise advise.

Thanks

Hi Wardo,
DVD-RAM and DVD-R drives are very different things. A DVD-R drive will
burn conventional writeable DVD discs, much like a CD burner burns writeable
CDs. A DVD-RAM drive uses a special DVD disk encased in a cartridge, which
come in capacities ranging from 2.6 to 9.4gb. It acts more like a Zip Disk -
you can copy individual files without having to wipe the entire disk. It's
great for backup and archival, but not a lot else.
Personally, I'd stay away from QPS Que products...too many bad reports.
LaCie make similar products, and really know what they're doing (and are VERY
Mac-focused). They also make a DVD-R and DVD-RAM drive in one, which won't
burn CDs (unlike their external SuperDrive, which will), but it will burn
DVD-R/RW discs, AND let you write/rewrite to DVD-RAM cartridges.
At the moment, unfortunately, iDVD won't work with ANY external Firewire
DVD burner, so you pretty much have to have an internal one.

Cheers,
- Martin.
