Well, here's the lyrics to the song which was talked about some time
ago on aus.jokes. It's by Andrew Denton and Chris Harriot. I have
tried to piece together who's singing what, but I may have made a few
mistakes.

Singers:

AD Andrew Denton
EMcF Elle Mc Feast
JG Jodie Gillies (on the video clip, this was mimed by Karen Tighe)
DS Debbie Spillane
LM Lex Marinos
PK Peter "Crackers" Keenan
RM Rex Mossop
BB Billy Birmingham (12th man)
PW Peter Wilkins
NZ Chorus of New Zealanders (i.e. sheep)

I DON'T CARE AS LONG AS WE BEAT NEW ZEALAND

AD: It's time for pain and agony
As we go for Olympic Gold
We give our all,
Compete then fall -
We're not the Australia of old.

No Cuthberts, Frasers, Hollands, Goulds
No Jacksons, Clarkes or Siebens
It's just not fair
But I don't care
As long as we beat - New Zealand!

EMcF: They say it's not if you win or lose
but how you play the game.
It's only sport
And not important -
Observe the Olympic flame.

AD: But every Aussie knows the score -
We all share that gut feeling.
As the medal count begins to mount...
Let us beat New Zealand!

CHORUS x 3:
It's just not fair but I don't care
It's just not fair but I don't care
As long as we beat...
As long as we beat...
As long as we beat New Zealand!

JG: As long as we beat New Zealand.
We got to beat New Zealand,
New Zealand...

DS: They come over here, eat our food, drink our beer,
Take our jobs and what is our thanks?

LM: They beat us at football and hockey and cricket -
They beat us at hating the Yanks!

PK: A nation consisting of 10 breeds of sheep
Some of whom got the vote.

RM: Whose national flower is the ug boot
And whose national noise is the gloat.

NZ: (to tune of Nesse Dorma as per tourism ads)
We het you Aussies for a surx...
We thnk we've proved we are the bist by far,
We're the bist!

BB: (spoken)
Stay where you are, New Zealand.
Just stay where you are.

AD: No Cuthberts, Frasers, Hollands, Goulds
No Conrads, Clarkes or Siebens.
Oh do despair but we don't care
Al long as we beat...

CHORUS: As long as we beat...
As long as we beat...

AD: New Zealand.

JG: New Zealand.

CHORUS repeat ad lib and fade.

(Spoken over repeated chorus)
PW: And we've just witnessed another stupendous
performance - we're going to cross to the
rowing basin now where the Kiwis have picked
up their 15th gold medal for kayaking.

BB: Oh! The Kiwis have done it again! Ha Ha...
Gee, another yachting gold - this time for
the neatest correct entry in the 11 and a
half foot with colourful spinnakers class.
Ha Ha... sensational stuff.

PW: Gold! Gold! Gold to New Zealand - Oh, they
really have dominated the sheep crutching
events, haven't they.

SHEEP: Baa.

Well, I hope that's some help.

If anyone is interested, this wonderful piece of Australian music is
available at your local ABC store on CD and cassette. It comes with
an interesting 'B' side entitled "We did quite well for a country
our size" (or something like that :)

Have fun folks, and enjoy yourselves every Friday 10:30pm ...

If you have a hi-fi VCR it isn't such a difficult choice...and I think
there are less than 25 versions on the CD...

Yes, but I think there are actually 27 different versions, as played on
'Rage' one night. In a fit of lunacy I taped them. Have you any idea what
it's like to watch 27 different versions of 'Stairway to Heaven'?
I wonder which ones they left out.

My favourite was a three-way tie between The Beatniks, The Australian Opera,
and Rolf Harris.

For sheer emotional punch, the best Stairways to Heaven must have been the
Leonard Teale version, especially when he chuckles and says `It makes me

I think the best version was the DAAS and Barry Crocker, but I think this
was left off Rage (At least when I taped it). Hopefully it will be on the
video.

I managed to get it a couple of Rages later when they played it solo.
But, I never did think much of the DAAS team, although Barry Crocker
was not too bad.

Although, I'm getting quite hooked on the B-52's version which sounds

I like the Sydney Philharmonia version, for the inventiveness and
cleverness of the arrangement (but I'm a singer, and biased towards that
sort of thing).
The Rolf Harris one is good for a laugh, but that's about all.

yeah they got Keating on and he was his usual boring self. Denton made him look
like an arsehole (I know that isn't hard) and he was too stupid to even realise
it! he tried to crack a couple of funnies but he was as funny as vizard on a bad
night.

when asked about 10 pin bowling he said it wasn't his 'thing'. then he stated he
was actively into sports (ha ha!) he also stated that he keeps fit by having an
active mind (double ha ha!) active doing what??? designing new flags?

Hmmmmm ... When I saw them all on Rage, the DAAS one was definitely there, how
could I forget it ? Does Rage vary from state to state ?
On to another subject, that of the subject line, could sum 1 mail or post me
the lyrics to "As long as we beat New Zealand" ? This was probably the reason
behind the original poster, but I wasn't reading this news group then, so if
they were posted, I missed 'em. Thanx in advance ...
