Doubtless the purists in this group will find ample shortcomings in the
Wellings to "feed them to the dogs," but I've had a set (GA-8283
floor-standers, GA-410 surrounds, and GA-412 centre) for a couple of months
now, and am delighted with their performance with respect to their price.
Granted, they're nowhere near as smooth or succinct as some of the
better offerings from Tannoy, Mission, Castle and the like, but I feel they
give the best sound possible for a setup less than $2000 - which considering
I paid less than $1000 for the 5-speaker set, is quite good value.
In hi-fi use, the main speakers seem a little boomy, but no more so than
popular offerings from other manufacturers. If I had the means, I'd
definitely go for a set of decent ribbon speakers - but then again, I'm not
related to the Packers or the Murdochs, so I'll have to just settle with
these ;)
Seriously, I can't fault them. I'd suggest you don't take my word for it
though; speakers are the most subjective purchase you will make for your
audio system, meaning what one person finds pathetic (I personally find
Wharfedale's offerings miserable), another might deem perfect for their
preferences. Grab your favourite CDs and pop over to your local hi-fi shop,
and audition the speakers - that's the only way you'll know if they're right
for you.
Have fun!
- Bob.
