Hi "Fi" persons,

Just thought I'd ask in case you might have bought/owned/gifted a "discman"
or similar CD portable with inbuilt (AM/FM pref'd) radio.

My Sony is great, but is now 10yrs OLD and I was looking to GIVE one to
someone at Christmas.

I've seen a Panasonic somewhere advertised for only $199, which seems good.
Let me know if you have experience with this. Prices seem to have plummeted
from around $399 2yrs ago.

And a nusic-related question- I appreciate these players are not as good
in performance as fullsize CD players - do you know if any manufacturer
has a better-soundng CD portable with radio? Sony/{anasonic/other?

I appreciate that this is NOT a seling point for this kind of device!

Merry Christmas & NYE
Ben

Panasonic units are still made in Japan where as sony and Kenwood are made
in China :( - Link goes to the SX289V which has an AM/FM tuner built in.

Made in xxx means little, unless it is made for too low a price.

Electronic components are mostly made offshore. Often only final
assembly is in Japan. The PRICE that goods are made to has far
more bearing on the quality than location.

It is a marketing ploy, in a way. The top line units are 'Made in Japan'
more because there's more fat in the bottom line, and image reasons,
rather than any intrinsic quality differences.

Don't believe me? Crack open your 'Made in Japan' item some time and
count the words China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Taiwan,
(Maybe even) Hungary and Ireland, on the components inside.

How many Japanese components are inside the PC you're using to read
this message? If you have an expensive screen, it might be.

PCs get many hours of use compared to other consumer electronics goods,
are highly complex by comparison, and, except for the software that
runs on them, amazingly reliable IME.

We have thousands at work, and an occasional fan or even power supply
dies. Hardware problems are pretty rare with a sample that size.

YMMV.

Only cheap power supplies die prematurely, because their power ratings are
optimistic and you're usually running them close to their limit. Fans often
die because they use really cheap, shitty sleeve bearing fans. But the
cheap, shitty sleeve bearing fans give you plenty of warning by vibrating
crazily before they fail. You'd have to have rocks in your head not to
notice :)

Agreed, but then we have a small number who don't notice (very
non-technical users), who say "I wondered what that smell was".

And yes cheaply made for tender!

Hi hifi-ers,
Re. CD portables w. radio, I ended up with a Teac (from JB HiFi,
because they advertised it).
40sec antishock, 5 AM & FM presets in the digital PLL tuner.
Made in CHINA (of course!)
12mth Teac Aus wty - at $129, inc car kit.

At this price there is no rechargeable battery, and I notice
that on the teac.com.au site there is a different model, which looks
sleeker.

The currently at teac.com.au model is still only $149 RRP, so this seems
to be the cheapest 'name' brand with 40 sec antishock.

Thank you for your responses. I'll post feedback on the unit when I hear
back from the person I gave the CD to.
