I see from tv ads & catalogues that JB Hifi are selling
an mp3 cd player for $215, and Strathfield may be
selling the same for a little more (can't really see
from the small picture). Has anyone picked up one
of these yet and can tell us anything about the
performance, whether they're good value for the
money? I hope they're not the Genica / MPTrip
models that are being sold at www.easybuy2000.com
which have had bad reviews.

Also, does anyone know of when Philips here will
be releasing their Expanium mp3 cd walkman?
I've tried e-mailing them but no response.

Thanks!

Bought one of these from easybuy2000. I must say that it is not as bad as
some reviews that I have read. It depends upon your use. If you are using it
as a portable player, then it is good (although easy to make skip under the
right (wrong?) conditions). If you want to get Hi-Fi quality from it through
a decent sound system, then forget it. I would suggest burning the MP3's to
audio CD. But, if your using it for parties or long (veeeery long stints of
music (perhaps instead of the radio) then it is great. I do get a slight hum
from the unit, however it doesn't seem to be on every disc. Could be just
the MP3 recording.
My advice is to take a disc to Strathfield or JB Hi-Fi and listen to it. If
you want a high quality unit, then wait six months...I'm sure that soon
enough every corner shop will have something similar......eventually one of
them will be of high quality.

Thanks for your comments, Paul. I was wondering though - if you were
to use it for parties, whether or not you'd require the sound to be
top notch hi fi quality. I've got a party coming up and it'd be a great
time to purchase one of these. I'm still hanging on for the Phillips
Expanium...or any other player that has at least 10 hours battery
playing time, supports long file names & VBR.

Yes, it's perfect for this sort of thing. Most people wouldn't know the
difference.
