SSONET 5.1 Model: BDS2002A
http://www.strathfield.com/viewproduct.asp?ProdID=1095
Might be ok for $399 (down from $699)
Anybody heard what they sound like?
A bit of Googling reveals they might be Korean from a company called Bigbeam
www.bigbeam.co.kr
Seems they have DTS, Dolby Prologic II, twin optical inputs & coax. Not bad.
Cant find any English pages to read its specs though.

would you say they'd be worse than a set of Logitech Z680 ?
that's the unit I was thinking of getting if I dont get these ones from
Strathfield.

Logitech is definitely better. Still it is better to have full sized, full
range speakers than these cheapo PC speakers.

Of course but how much more than the $400 mark does one have to spend?
And not everyone wants to spend >$1000 for television sound.
Myself, I'm very happy with the sound I get from a Yamaha TSS-1 system
for the tv in the lounge.
Bang-for-buck, the Strathfield system is certainly worth considering.
I saw it couple of weeks ago and it seems nicely constructed and
speakers weren't your typical light-weights so sound might not be too
bad.
At $399 they seem a bargain.
Unfortunately nobody at Strathfield knew how to get them working to
demo them to me but thats another story :-)

Well if it's hooked up to the TV and DVD player, then it's not just a system
for your TV. You then have a music system as well.

Well if the sound is good enough for you, that's all that matters.

You should ask for them to let you hook it up. :)
LOL
Seriously though, if you don't *need* 5.1 pick up a DSE 2x80x amp ($146)
and a pair of decent second hand speakers for $250.
Ben
Why get 5.1 surround when you can get 7.1?
And that's going to make a bad movie good? Personally I find plain old
vanilla stereo transmits more profane dialogue and absurdly
exagerrated sound effects than I want to hear.

BTW Your average Porno is not renown for dialogue, acting,
story line or DD/DTS 5/6/7.1
TT
> Because there's only a handful of discrete 6.1 titles and no 7.1.
But with Dolby Digital EX particularly, you get speakers for the centre
rears mixed together from the rears, so there's always gonna be something
happening behind you.
Yeah, same reason why you have a centre speaker with Pro Logic.
It is because unless you have a home theatre with only one chair, then someone
(other than you) will not be in the optimal listening position.
So as with a stereo sound field across the front, centre dialog will appear to
come from the closest front speaker (or near to it). It is the same for the
rear speakers, unless you have a SB or SBL/SBR setup.
All these things are only done to cater for imperfect listening positions.
Consider that your hearing is stereo, so if stereo recordings were done for
movies using ear shaped baffles around the left/right microphones, then you
could get perfect surround sound by watching the movie with headphones.
