I have seen some surround speakers that are bi-polar (I think that's what
they called them). It meant that they had at least two drivers, each firing
in different directions. This is supposed to give a more diffuse sound, more
desirable for the surround speakers.

Any comments on this.

I am looking for surround speakers for say $500. What would be a good set. I
don't really want anything too big either.

Opinions/advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Sean.

Try this:

The question of whether they're better or worse is often
contentious. I think it comes down to personal preference.

I have a pair of bipolar speakers and I think there great. They certainly
give of a much more diffused sound which allows people that aren't sitting
in the "sweet spot" to still get a much better sound.

I think they are the only true surround speaker for the home.

Hi Sean,

I personally don't like bipolar speakers... to me, they remove the
directionality out of the rear channels, and I've always thought the
point of digital surround was to give those directional effects from the
rear. Note that vocals from the rear (very rare mind you) may sound
muffled and distorted by using bipolar speakers.

However, it is upto personal taste... if you like what you hear, go for
it. I prefer to use good old fashioned speakers for the rear myself.

Cheers,
Mal

The bi-polar debate has been thrashed around this NG several times in the past.
Do a deja (google now?) search and see what you can dredge up.

Cheers,

Mark

Done just such a search on google (newsgroups).

Oh dear, I didn't realise I was stepping into religious territory - almost
like apple vs windows :)

Thankyou though for everyone's two cents, and it has certainly pointed to
where I can find more info.

Cheers,

Sean.

I have a pair of Di-Pole speakers, they're Grrreaaat!

Bi-Poles front/back array are fired in the same phase
Di-Poles front/back array are fired in opposite phase.

I would say Di-Poles are better. Tri-Poles are the best, if you can afford
them.
