I've been asked what other CD player I think is in the same range of
quality as this unit.
Unfortunately I can't say. I haven't tried many high-end units because
every time I heard any CD player, either in my system or a friends, I
was so unimpressed that I gave up trying.
My old Marantz CD63 (even modified) was just OK, but never stimulated me
to the extent that I actually wanted to listen to more music more often.
This was my experience whenever I listened to any CD, so the whole
medium became an exercise in frustration. The music I enjoy is only
released on CD (or MP3 now) so I bought only what I felt I really
couldn't do without--even though I listened to it infrequently. I just
kept on enjoying the LP's I had collected, although I love finding new
music as well.
Since this 970 arrived less that a week ago, I reckon I've listened to
more CD's than in the last 6-12 months. At last, a reason to head to the
record shops again!
I hope you all get as much satisfaction from yours.

Greg Im happy with my 970 too. Im running ME amps and B & W speakers (and
thinking of trying some of those new VAF DCX's?)

What type of gear are you running your 970 on?

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,
My amp is an ME 15/850, speakers are Linn Kabers.
Interconnects are a mixed bag, mostly old Monster Cables when they were
making hyper-litz (yes, each filament insulated) and some Apature Black
Snakeskin that Peter Stein recommended for pre-power link.
My main room is basically 6.4 by 6.8 metres, irregularly shaped with
many openings to other rooms, and a 3 metre cathedral ceiling.
It all makes for some lovely music.
Luckily, I also have view over a river valley--the far hills are about
2.5 km away.
The DCX's have the reputation of being a bit 'harsh' for good hi-fi,
they are (were) the budget line. Last time I was at VAF they were
renovating and I didn't get a chance to hear the I-66's which was why I
went.
The other speakers I've had my eye on are the ones by Rod Crawford--who
designed the Kabers for Linn. I think he is currently in Melbourne.
