"DC Marketing" is calling mobiles, possibly with an illegal dialler
although that's hard to prove, and hanging up, leaving "missed calls"
on phones around the country. The phone owner calls to find out who it
is, and is told they've "won" a $40 prize, and have to call a 900
number (apparently at $2.50/min plus connection charges) to get their
prize claim number. Without having called it I'm not entirely certain
what happens from there, but knowing how these scams usually operate,
they have a long message, then put you through to an operator, who puts
you on hold, so 10 minutes and $25 later, you get to spend another $25
going through your own details so they can post you the cheap
fifty-cent plastic kazoo or whatever it is that you "won" that in their
fantasy land usually retails for $40, and add you to their sucker list
for future scams (that I'll bet they sell to other scammers). Google
this:

and follow the tips here:

to banish these sacks of shit from your phone permanently. The ACCC and
Telstra won't do bugger all.

Just to start, block these:

Do many people ring back? I always assume that, if they don't leave a
message and they're not in my phone book, it must have been a wrong
number.

AS the man once said : "There's a sucker born every minute!"

Unless your the only one that hasn't received Spam Email, most (90% of them) are scams.
You would be surprised how many out of 100,000 would actually reply or
place an order. The spam scam business makes ~40 billion a year world wide.
Phone Scams/Telemarketing works on exactly the same principles, somebody
will reply absolutely.

Thats just a number plucked out of someone's arse.

> Phone Scams/Telemarketing works on exactly the same principles,

Nope. With the absolute vast bulk of those
they dont cost you any more than your time.

Wrong. 900 numbers cost plenty. Once you reply, they charge every time
* they ring you *.

With a bulk account text messages can cost them only a fraction of a
cent.
