Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows where tobacco seeds can be bought in
Australia, Or have laws changed to make it illegal?

Ahh yes, give up. Been 4 weeks for me now. Spent the first 2 weeks on
patches, last 2 cold turkey, no problems.
ANyway, I was going to say that I think that the seeds are hard to get, not
for sale, as the Tobacco industry doesn't want people growing it, they will
lose business.
Similar to hops seeds. If you buy hops seeds from health food shops, the
seeds are sterilised, so people can't grown them.
Then again, looks like I'm worng.

I know you didn't ask, but if you want hop seeds then you used to be able to
get them from Phoenix Seeds in Snug, Tasmania)

A www.google.com search revealed this from one Victorian site........

" Please note: This publication is intended as general information only.
The growing of tobacco in Australia is now regulated by the Australian
Taxation Office (ATO). Permission for commercial or private cultivation or
manufacture of tobacco should be sourced from Bob Harkins, Compliance Team
Manager, (02) 9374 8501. "

A bit like 'stilling' your own grog I suppose.......the Gov. wants its
excise !!

P.S.
Unless there is some specisl reason for growing from seed, consider root
cuttings which will grow true, but seeds won't necessarily

its not illegal to grow tobacco !!!
You are legal once you have registered with the ATO.

well, first you have to register then you'll be approved, they'll want to
know if your selling it to the 2 tobacco manufactures or for your own use,
if its for your own use, you have to pay the ATO approx. $250 for every kilo
you produce.
Also the ATO will do regular audits.
To sell to the tobacco manufactures you must have a contract with them.

I bought some seeds from this Chris person from ausseeds.com and the order never came. He was quick to respond to my email pre-purchase though when my order never arrived after 9 weeks I never got a response. Thank goodness I bought the seeds via PayPal so I made a claim in PayPal for a refund. After no response from Chris, PayPal closed the case in my favour and refunded me. I would have preferred my seeds. DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PERSON.
