Hello to all,
does anybody know, where I can buy horseradish roots in
Western-Australia-Metro-Area (Perth and suburbs)? Years ago I saw one in
an italian vegie-shop which unfortunately no longer exists.
thanks a lot

I bought a horseradish plant from the permaculture nursery on High St
(adjacent to Fremantle Golf Course).

Thanks a lot Ormonde. I'll come to Fremantle in some days and have a look.

You should be able to get horseradish from Poenix seeds in Tasmania, or from
Diggers seeds in Victoria. As to what you do with it when you've got it see
Australian Gourmet Traveller, June '99 edition, page 21

Hello Barry,
horseradish is for cooking. There are a lot of recipes using horseradish as a
relish for sauces or even pure, for horseradish cream, for horseradish mustard
or using it as a herb i.e. pickling cucumbers, capsicum.....
Fresh grated horseradish is very sharp, bites your eyes.. but tastes great with
fresh made sausages (i.e. hungarian "Garlic Bratwurst", with "Tafelspitz"
(recipe from Austria, a certain piece of veal, cooked ...)
Because I can't see it at the markets or continental- or gourmet shops, it is
worth for me to grow it.
Enjoy cooking, become a gourmet and you've found one of the best...

If you like eating horseradish they're worth growing.

Love that "bites your eyes" terminology. Don't forget it's
effect on the nose as well if you take a big chunk too
quickly. Think hot english mustard.

BTW, isn't it also that stuff that you usually get beside
a plate of sushi/sashimi - the green paste that tastes delicious
when you mix it in with soy (not too much - see above).

Great stuff though (I'm now thinking rare roast beef sandwich with
lettuce and horseradish sauce for lunch today).

Cheers

When next at your deli, ask for roast-beef-and-horseradish sandwiches.

Yum.
