I have two Grevillea Honey Gems, each just over one year old and approx 1.5
metres high. They are at different ends of the garden in full sun. After
thriving in the first year, the leaves on the upper two thirds of both
plants are turning brown and dropping.

Both plants attempted to set racemes, but they did not fully develop.

Do these Grevilleas lose their leaves during winter, or is there something
wrong with them? Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

Whereabouts are you -- I have Honey Gems here in Brisbane and they are just
about unkillable.

Have they been hit by a frost maybe?

No idea what is happening. Honey Gem is a hardy grev. hybrid. Did you
fertilise them at all? they do not like high phosphorous fertilizers. They
do not lose their leaves in winter. Where in Australia are you from? If you
are from a very cold area maybe too cold. Bruce Wallace

I have had the same problem with Honey Gem and other Grevillias and I'm on
sand but found that they were still getting too much watering. I've
separated the grevillias to a part of the garden that only gets the rain and
no other watering even in the middle of summer and where they get full sun
for all the day, and now they are thriving. In the other areas I've only
planted grafted grevillias and that seems to work as they'll take some
watering.I'm on the East coast near Nwecastle where in the past couple of
years we've had a lot of rain all year round.

Thanks, I think that is the problem. Even though I live in Perth and we have
had very little rain, I dug around them and the soil was very wet. They are
both at the bottom of a slope where runoff tends to pool. I'll look around
and plant something more suitable there (the dwarf bottlebrushes next to
them love it!).
