I can't seem to find a hydroponics store that sells it.
Are there any other NG's in Aus. which would know this?
Thanks in advance.
Hi James,
Do not know if this helps. Some homebrewers in the US use agar to culture
their yeast.
I pinched this from a site in regard to agar: -
The least expensive form is a dried stick and is available in oriental food
stores or an oriental ingredient section of a large supermarket. It must be
ground up to get it to dissolve easily and more of it is needed to get the
desired stiffness of the growth media. DO NOT USE the packets of vanilla
flavoured Agar sold in the same stores. This is only good for moulded
gelatine foods.
A better source can be found at health food shops. Powdered or granular Agar
is sold in bags of 100 g for about $10. This is what I use as there are no
additives, purity is high and it is economical. A 100 g bag will make about
60 plates.
The best grade is available at the lab supply store where you got the Petrie
dishes. USP grade granular Agar is very pure and is intended for culturing.
The cost is usually three times higher than the health food store grade but
the purity is probably close to the same.
I only hope this helps.
Cheers
Richard
Try Austratec. They're a general tissue culture supply company. You could also
try asking a local orchid society. Most orchid societies usually have members
who do a bit of flasking. You could ask them where they get their supplies.
