NEW FEATURE FILM
With the Oscars causing Hollywood heartburn, the announcement of a new
$AUS9.1 million Australian feature to be shot in Queensland comes as
welcome relief for local film industry professionals intent on building
a profile for the local industry.
An international cast is set to star in the film about tragic
post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin with the shoot taking place in
the Port Douglas region of Far North Queensland as well as in Prague.
The announcement of the new feature, called Paradise Found, was made
yesterday by the Minister for Employment, Training and Youth and
Minister for the Arts, Matt Foley.
The Minister also congratulated the Pacific Film and Television
Commission (PFTC) who were responsible for attracting the production to
Queensland after hosting a number of location scouts and providing
financial incentives to the production. Mr Foley said he was excited by
the employment opportunities Paradise Found would bring to the north of
the state.
"The south east corner of Queensland has for some time benefited from
the work generated by off-shore productions attracted by the PFTC.
However in recent years the Far North has also had its fair share of
PFTC windfall with productions such as Survivor II - The Outback, Glen
Close's South Pacific and now Paradise Found" Mr Foley said. CEO of the
PFTC, Robin James, said the new production did not just mean work for
film crews and actors.
"We're also talking about jobs in support industries such as
hospitality, transport, equipment hire and post-production. We saw the
same thing happen after the PFTC secured Scooby-Doo for Queensland." Mr
James said. Paradise Found will explore two important phases in the life
of Gauguin - his time spent in Paris and his infamous sabbatical in
Tahiti where he produced some of his most renowned work.
Australian producer/director Mario Andreacchio (The Flying Doctors,
Napoleon) returns to Queensland to shoot the Tahiti scenes for Paradise
Found, having shot The Real Macaw in Brisbane in 1996/1997. South
Australia's Adelaide Motion Picture Company is producing the feature in
affiliation with French company Le Sabre. The Australian Film Finance
Corporation has contributed to the Australian side of the co-production.
The production will start shooting in and around Port Douglas at the end
of May for three weeks before relocating to Prague to shoot scenes set
in Paris.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES ANNOUNCES PLANS TO FILM “THE MATRIX” SEQUELS IN
AUSTRALIA
Burbank, CA, March 29, 2001 – Producer Joel Silver and directors Larry
and Andy Wachowski will shoot sequels to their groundbreaking, Academy
Award-winning blockbuster “The Matrix” in Australia, it was announced
today by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, President of Worldwide Production,
Warner Bros. Pictures.
“We had a terrific experience shooting ‘The Matrix’ in Australia,”
Lorenzo di Bonaventura said. “We look forward to returning to the
state-of-the-art facilities and incredible locations in Sydney to shoot
the sequels in collaboration with the talented local production crew and
with the cooperation of the Australian government.”
“This is wonderful news because it’s return business,” said Bob Carr,
the Sydney-based Premier of New South Wales. “‘The Matrix’ was the
first big international production to come to our new Sydney studios.
Now the sequels will be shot here as well. That’s a great vote of
confidence in our crews, our locations and our facilities. It confirms
our position as a leading film-making destination.”
After completing preliminary photography in California, the production
will be based at the Fox Studios in Sydney. “The Matrix” sequels will
film on location in Sydney with the support and assistance of the
Federal Government, the State Government of New South Wales, N.S.W.
State Premier Bob Carr, and the Office of State and Regional
Development.
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving will
reprise their roles from “The Matrix.” Also returning will be
Australian producer Andrew Mason, as well as numerous local crew members
and award-winning technicians from the original “Matrix” production.
The highly acclaimed action thriller won four Academy Awards, became the
fastest-selling DVD on record at the time of its release, and has
accumulated the biggest box office in Warner Bros. Pictures’ history –
over $450 million worldwide.
“The Matrix” sequels are scheduled to begin production in Sydney in
September 2001. The films will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.
Pictures and, in select territories, by Village Roadshow Pictures.

You will be liable for copyright infringement if you take a "substantial

exception in the Copyright Act 1976 for "fair dealing" There are a
number of factors, including whether or not there is commercial purpose
Alas You are in The wrong country
In Australia There is no general fair dealing defence in the Copyright

MUFF 2: Shitfire!
Dear Gawain/Filmnet,
Just a short communique to let all interested parties know that the next
MUFF/MUC general meeting (open to the public) will be held on April 4 at
7pm at "onsixone", 161 High st., Prahran, 1st floor, cnr high and chapel
st's. This is 100% confirmed or we will make Benny from "onesixone"
swing from the rafters on the night.
MUFF is breeding along nicely and gaining momentum. We have confirmed
some overseas guests who are coming here to support the OZ premiere's of
their films, off
their own wicket...so to speak, such is their excitement. The new team
has really got things under way. Helmsy's NZ sections is looking strong,
as is our retrospective on Australian Cult Film part deux and new
cinematic goodies. Beck Sutherland is calling the
shorts section "The Klaus Initiative" and is keen for more shorts gang
...so send them in.
We are planning to curate a section under the guidance of Chris Howard
and Matt Boyle on Banned Films showing the likes of "Salo",
"Nekromantik", "Cannibal Holocaust" and the like with debates Re: the
validity and necessity of censorship. This should tie in nicely
to a recent cool book, "See no Evil", a Headpress imprint, on cinema
censorship and shocks, from the video nasty days to the present.
We are going to go and speak to some of the film school students and get
some of the young talent involved in MUFF/MUC if we can. Hopefully
before they get brain washed/processed too much by the establishment and
wish to at least provide a different
perspective. If you'd like someone from MUFF to speak to your students,
contact Shane M. on this email who is setting up the schedule:

To Contact & Booze Schmooze
Thanks, Gawain, for a news letter that is consistently informative,
relative and interesting to read. Is it my imagination or is Melbourne
much better at -- and in real need of -- communication than is Sydney?
Rod Quantock (sp?) told me once that the best comedy comes out of
Melbourne because the weather forces creative people together (in summer
with airconditioning, in winter with heaters) whereas in Sydney it is
the weather, beaches and open air that forces them apart.
Whatever -- the 'Booze Schmooze' idea, outlined in your latest news
letter, is something that I wish somebody (else) in Sydney would
emulate. There used to be self-bought drinks and good lively chat once
a month between writers, directors and producers at the Forresters Pub
in Surry Hills but this hasn't been going for a couple of years now. I
would appreciate hearing about any existing -- or planned -- equivalent
to the 'Booze Schmooze' happening in Sydney.
Also, I would like to be in touch with Natalia Ortiz about the Spanish
Film Festival in Sydney in May, and the directors who are coming. I'm a
screenwriter who lived in Madrid for eight years (writing about film for
L.A. Times and Hollywood Reporter) and would very much like to know the
state of interest with co-production ideas. Thanks -- Patricia

BAD DOSE OF NOVA
Dear Filmnet,
I was disappointed during my last visit to the Nova when after paying
$13.00 for admission I was jammed into an incredibly small, cramped
cinema with poor sound and poor projection.
I found the small size of the screen very disappointing (I think it was
cinema number 8 or 9). I go to the cinema to have a 'cinematic
experience', not to sit in my lounge room (admittedly the screen was at
least better than my tv).
Despite complaining about the projection during the interval ('2001')
nothing was done about the fact that the picture was not alligned with
the screen. Finally, I could hear the soundtrack from the film in a
different cinema and when the film had ended I could
even hear the vacuum!
Generally I think the Nova does a fantastic job of showing interesting
and diverse films. I also think the Melbourne cinema scene is far better
off for having Nova dose. But I think that the proliferation in cinema
screens should not be at the expense of the 'cinematic experience' which
is, after all, the reason we go to the cinema rather than watch a
stinking video. – CP
<GM: Poor soundproofing sounds like a real problem and having poor
alignment and not fixing it after being notified is poor service.
However I’ve noticed that at quite a few cinemas that part of the film
is projected off the screen and I’m never sure whether films are meant
to have those `train effects’ in the soundtrack at the Cinemedia
`bunker’ Theatre!>

Bad Ass Mono Winged Angel gets PFTC Support
Dear Gawain
Many thanks for running a story on our short film being invited to
Dublin. I am very pleased to say that the Pacific Film and Television
Commission has agreed to give us the money for the release print. I'm
especially happy to say that they have moved quickly to process our
application and they have been very supportive. I also appreciate the
encouragement offered by people who have written to filmnet or to me
personally.
On a different note we have had some more good news. Bad Ass Mono Winged
Angel is a finalist in the Queensland New Filmmaker's Awards, as is my
first film, 'The Burning Boy'. And The Burning Boy has been invited to
screen at the Toronto International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in May.
Best wishes Kieran Galvin
<GM: Good news and fast moving by the PFTC! Ah the luck of the Irish!>

Bad Ass Mono-Winged Angel - FUNDING APPROVED
In response to Owen Chasly's concerns (filmnet 4.029) about the post
production funding of the short film Bad Ass Mono-Winged Angel to screen
at the Dublin International Film Festival. We are happy to say that we
got the go ahead just yesterday morning from the Pacific Film and TV
Commission (PFTC) for post production funding. They chose our Option 2,
which involved cleaning up the sound a bit and getting a kine to 16mm
print.
Thank you for your support Owen and Gawain, we won't have to miss this
great opportunity to send our film to an International festival. On
another note the short film will also be a finalist at the Qld New
Filmmakers Awards in April.
The Australian Cinematographers Society Qld Branch is also screening the
short film on Tuesday 27th March, please see the information in the
advertising/PR section. The film won, one of four grants in 2000 for the
advancement of cinematography, valued at $1000.

Dear Friends of Cinema,
I have to admit that I read your newsletter every week, though I am
miles away from Australia. It makes me wish I lived there since there
seems to be so much going on. It makes Austin look boring, and
sometimes it is. I was hoping you could post our call for entries
(below) on your newsletter.
Cinematexas is an International Short Film Festival that is in it's 6th
year of showing amazing shorts from all over the world to an Austin
audience and more. And, of course, it is important that we receive
some of these shorts from Australia. In '99, we screened Phillip
Crawford's film "First Love," and still list it as one of the festival
favorites in our publicity and it remains a favorite of our staff. We
also screened the film "Hurt," made by the children of Australia in
2000, in a part of our first ever Cinemakids program, a program devoted
to honoring the work made by youths.
Sincerely, Bethany
