you see it wasn't until 74 that thos whiz kid agronomist's whatever
one might call them realised that teh pamphlet creek part of the oxley
creek system did not empty into teh brisbane river right there where
les thiess's daughter lives/lived, not excess water from the brisbane
river by design of nature flowed into that creek and thence into the
swampy flood lands where much of salisbury now is, then though the
natural system to renter the river furtehr downstream. so the flood
issue was helped along way back then.
remember somerset also a flood mitigation dam was built in the early
1900 i dunno now wasn't there about the 1920's maybe, it too was
touted as stopping brisbane (built on flood plains and swamps from
ever flooding again, so the gov and their sciences backup have gotten
it wrong twice now.
as the mitigation work was carried out mostly in the oxley creek
environ when that was finished they all lauded how app' 3 meters had
been knocked off the top of 74 flood. the creek work was to stabalise
and clean creek banks using cages filled with rocks, de-sludge the
creek system, remove all sort of garbage including car bodies,
reclaimed and compensated people to leave their homes on the flood
plains (silly allowing any building on flood plains hey but why waste
good ratable land). and when wivenhoe was finished they yelled we have
chopped 8 meters off the 74 flood it will never flood again.
we where living there while all this postulating went on, then they
built teh flood saver to great wivenhoe flood mitigation dam (nothing
to do with water storage) a dam that ended up now get this 190% full i
mean when was there more than 100% in 100%?? anyhow our city leaders
and state and fed gov all pronounced with much banter "no no never
agin will ipswich or brisbane flood" so they opened up all thatg
reclaimed flood plain to be built on after all teh council needed
ratable land, the gov needed to earn land taxes, and the gullable
yuppy classes jsut had to have river frontage.
direcvtly i don't blasm the button pushers they are the lowest common
denominator in all this, i blame the gov and councils sorry for having
such inept regulations for these workers to follow, but also the head
honcho should have shown some common sense in the whole issue instead
of shutting the gates early to stop the stupid wow factorers hell bent
on seeing water flow from flood gagtes, and the ensuing traffic issues
attached to that folly.
yes the house we lived in went completely under in 74 we weren't there
of course we came 10 or so years later and the house stunk of flood
mud you see in 74 they didn't strip walls from houses they didn't
rewire homes, like this time around. the bloke who bought the place
found all the mud when he pulled out walls to reneovate the place,
which realy should ahve been demolished back then it was only 3
ex-wacol army huts joined together. never meant for permanent
accomodation. but that's another story the place burnt down due to the
main power feed wire from the pole through the ceiling to the power
box.
humans need to wise up stop building on flood plains and swamps and
wetlands, buyer beware be warned stop buying those places and they
will stop building them.
the gov is squarely to blame and no dam even somerset should ever be
allowed to go over 100%, somerset went to 160% i believe, the carrying
capacity of the dam should be honestly known at all time. the ace up
the sleave of lying politicians won't work as we just experienced.
will it happen again you bet your tukely it will, as the people are
too naive and gullable, so the gov' gets away with bad policy.
i mean our leader even seemd to be proclaiming she broke the drought
in qld as the wivenhoe had reached 90something% full.
