I am looking at getting parts from Digikey, and I remember seeing
other people mention here that they have bought parts from them.
Can anyone tell me how long it took them to deliver parts from
stock to Australia - preferrably to Perth?
Thanks,
Tony
About a week Tony, however these days, they will require you to sign an
export friendly agreement, and fax it back to them.
And except about $25 to $40USD for any small size package, so make sure
you make it worth while, but don't go over $250AUD, or you may find
yourself on the bench at OZ customs for a day or two.
Now that is one way to have some real fun. I stop myself before I tell
you what I really think about our system and US postage.

You've been burnt too, hey Don...?
I got done for $55 to receive a bunch of free samples collected from Maxim
and a couple other places coz the parcel had a nominally declared value of
US$300. The nominal value was placed at Aus Custom's insistence regardless
of the fact that I had signed letters from the suppliers saying that a) they
were not charging me a penny on either the bits or the shipping, and b) they
would replace them free of charge if I asked them to.
The only reason I didn't send the bits back was that if I'd had to buy them
they'd have cost way more than $55 (which I think they knew, and hence knew
that I basically wouldn't say no, but I don't think they figured on me
kicking up quite such a stink as I did before eventually relenting).
Aus Customs still insisted that the bits had an "intrinsic value" and since
no other value could be applied accurately, they insisted on the one-off US
retail pricing for the bits....
Oh, the fact that they also charge VOTI (A fed. govt. imposed "duty", in
other words a TAX), on top of the declared value, and then take GST on the
total means that the GST is being applied as a Tax on a Tax, which they said
they'd never do... but do you think I'm going to try to take Aus Customs to
court over it..? Not bloody likely... Even if I won, I'd never get an
overseas parcel in or out of the country again without being submitted to
all sorts of bureaucracy,...
But I've probably said too much already.
D.
Though it looks like it may turn into a problem.
I was looking at the Power Trends (now TI) DC-DC converters (coz
ASTEC have been very inconsiderate and stopped production of the
9-32V in / 12V 2A out DC-DC converter :( ) even though they are
open frame, not RF shielded.
We were looking at about 50 units (at $22USD ea) so that would have
triggered the Customs threshold.
Anyway, looks like in the short term that we will use an equivalent
from AMTEX as delivery is an issue and they can deliver 16 from
stock which gets us up and running.
Thanks again.

How did you know they got stopped at customs? Was there a letter sent to you
to tell you to pick them up?
cheers
Jason
I've bought plenty of stuff from Digikey for work, and have never had a
problem with customs delays. Most stuff arrives within a week, and the
nice thing about Digikey is they now have an option under "shipping
method" for sending stuff via USPS, which I've found to be very
efficient. Also, IIRC customs don't charge sales tax or duty on _POSTAL_
shipments where the chargeable amount is less that $50, which means that
the "threshold" would be closer to US$250 (including postage). This
doesn't apply to FedEx etc, who will always charge the taxes.

A lot of companies are changing their policies also:
I have dealt with jdr.com for years, and these are the last two messages
I got from them below, this was for a small shipment:
1)
I received your order, but we do not ship items through the mail
service
anymore due to lost shipments. Please choose one of the following
methods
DHL, Fed Ex, or UPS. Also please advise shipping address you would
like
order shipped to.
OK, I said UPS thanks!
2)
The cheapest shipping that I found for you would be DHL for $34.25.
The
only way for us to ship your package through the postal service would
be
to take package there, but they will charge a $18.00 insurance form
which
would make shipping $31.27. Let me know if you still would like to
place
the order.

I had no option but to tell them that I wouldn't be ordering again, as
other companies have the same goods, and will ship to me without all
these additional charges. postage and goods about the same price on this
one from jdr
Mind you, I have found similar escalating problems with my business
recently.
