I guess this is sort of related to electronics :) Just a quick
question regarding channel seven's new 'adopt-a-dot' competition. They
say that the 'dot' (that they mail out to you) will store a special
signal (presumably unique to channel seven) to proove you watched a
certain program, is this really possible? If so, what sort of signal
would it be storing, how does it work?

Details about the competition from seven's website:

"It all begins when you pick up a DOT and place it on your TV screen
during a special Channel Seven program."

<snip>

"Tune your TV to Channel Seven before one of the designated programs
for this competition starts."

"To activate your DOT, peel off the safety sticker and place it on the
TV screen in the bottom right-hand corner once the program has
started. The red spot on the screen should be in centre of the your
DOT, and the red arrowhead on the DOT pointing upwards. Your special
DOT will store a signal throughout the entire program."

Humm,,, Well my dot won't work any more ;-)
pulled it part,,

From what i saw there is a layer of like film (silver on top to stop light
getting in from the top) under the logo ,its orange film,,, and when i got
a light (white light) on it if for 30 sec it went yellow,, So this is the
key i say ;-)

I was intrigued by this too, but didn't have a dot to play with.

OK, so if it's a light sensitive film, averaging (summing?) the signal over
the length of a program, the image would be... grey / noise .

Maybe the TV channel superimposes a pattern in that area every 10 or 20
frames.

I am also a bit curious abou this, especially the statements about not being
able to change channels during the show or the dot will not work. This
seems ok if the film was storing some sort of average image, but when you
take into account the various sizes of picture tube, reception quality, and
tube intensity.....who are they trying to kid?? I say they are light
activated film, stick it to the telly for 1/2 an hour and send it in..

I've noticed that the white ' :-) ' happy face is offset in different
directions from the red Target/Alignment spot for different programs.
This would be turning certain orange spots to yellow and not others.

This has been heavily discussed in aus.comms, you might want to head over
there before the whole thread expires...

Hope this helps,

Cheers Jon. My original question has more or less been answered, but
it's still worth a read.
