Strange thing happened today. I created two data ISO's with Ultra ISO
and after formating, by erasing in Alcohol 120%, I burnt the first one
to a DVD+RW disk no problem. When I went to burn the second one Alcohol
said to erase it to format the disk which I did but when I went to burn
to the disk after that it failed and said to format the disk again. I
tried to erase/format again but noticed that it would only erase to 2%
and then jump to 100% and say finished. If I then check the disk in
Alcohols CD/DVD manager it shows the disk as unformated and empty. This
goes on and on with lots of different DVD-RW disks and I also tried to
erase/format with TMPGenc DVD Author. It will not erase/format Read
Write disks at all, I presume because it sees that the disks ARE empty,
they are all new disks. If I try to burn something with TMPGenc DVD Author
it fails

with some stupid generic error.

I went to Pioneer's site and updated the burner to the latest 1.20
firmware and it's still doing the same thing. I removed the burner and
controller from device manager and reinstalled them and it's still doing
it.

So,I just found a DVD-RW disk that had some data on it from a previous
test of something and tried to erase and burn to it. The dvr-108 erased
it compleatly with no problem and Alcohol cd/dvd manager showed it as a
formated, empty DVD-RW disk ready for writing. Sure enough I burnt the
image I was trying to burn earlier to that disk with no problem.

It seems that it just will not format new disks anymore. It will do
everything else just fine. Can anyone else give me any ideas to try out?

How about burning a small movie onto the disc first. Then you'll have
something on it to erase and be ready for formatting.

Use nero to burn the disks.

What brand of media?

How do I burn anything on to it until it's been formated? :) If the disk
has had anything on it before this afternoon then I can do what you say,
just erase it and then burn to it but not if it's new. I formated 5 of
the new ones this morning and they were fine.

Since my last post I have taken four more previously recorded DVD+RW
disks and copied the data off of them to my hard drive and then erased
the disks and burnt the data back to the them with no problems. These
disks are from the same spindle as the new ones I am trying to use now.
I tried disks from the bottom of the spindle and from the middle of the
spindle.

I have also installed clone CD on the machine just to try another burning
program and got the same results erasing and burning with it.

Everything works perfectly on used disks but no go on new ones that need
to be formated.

They are Ridata and I was using them this morning and before that with
no problems.

A friend just emailed me a program called Sonic DLA, which he says can
treat a DVD or CD like a floppy. He says he believes the disks don't
need to be formated for this program . I will give it a try in the
morning it's 1:00Am now and I have other things to get done tonight,
like eat something. If he is right this may provide a work around but it
still leaves a puzzle to be solved.

Thanks

Use nero 6 to burn. Nero 6 formats the disk before writing to re write
media.

Sonic dla can cause its own problems as does all utilities that
require a memory resident program to format the media.
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=%22sonic+dla%22&meta=

Memory redisent packetwriting programs often conflict with other
burning programs.

When i burn a DVD movie with nero it doesnt say anything about formatting.
If i burn a Data DVD it does.

Nero 6 certainly formats before either data or video before it starts
to burn.

Perhaps you hav enot noticed this or you have a version that is not up
to date or a pirate version which doesn't work as it should.

On R or RW?

I only have 1 RW disc that i use. If i use it for Data it tells me it needs
to be formatted. If i burn a movie onto the disc, it doesnt.

Nero 6.6.0.1

6.6.0.8 is the latest version. I'm not fucking around downloading that for
little gain.

Had just decided to try that today.

Ridata DVD+RW. If you look in alt.video.dvdr there is someone else with
the exact same problem with a dvr-108.

I have tried just about everything else so maybe I will give Nero a try.
Someone else in a local group suggested that Nero may be better at
formating a disk??

BTW, I have found someone else with the exact same problem. You can read
it in the group alt.video.dvdr. She is using another burner to format
her disks now. Seems to only happen with the same Ridata disks I am
using, I believe they are anyway. She says one day her burner just
stopped formating them but will format others, just like mine. Will call
Pioneer today.

Noted, will hold off on that, for now anyway.

dvd-rw or dvd+rw. Nero detects it as a re write disc and formats it
within a few seconds.

I burn using a ridata +rw 4x and instead of erasing and burning, nero
automatically formats it and then burns to the re write disk.

Nero 6.6.0.15a is the latest version.

Well I tried Nero and got the same results. Aparantly it's the laser
needs realignment. Below is the Pioneer support story I posted to another
group.

Pioneers support, at least here in Canada is horrible. I was given phone
numbers in the USA to call that only work from the USA and then a USA
number that worked, but insisted I call the previous USA number that
only works from the US. Then I got a different number in the US to call
from Canadian support and waded through 5 levels of voice mail menus till
I reached a zip code blockage. I am in Canada and it would not allow a
Canadian postal code no matter how I tried to get it in there.

When I called them back in Canada they said it was my fault for making
a wrong menu selection.

Try dialing 1-800-872-4159. They answer the phone as the "advanced sales
group" which just about made me call Canada back to complain again until
I heard the 3rd choice which seemed the most technical of the bunch.

Punch 1 For Tad and recorders and some other specific stuff
Punch 2 for all others
punch 3 for parts inquires and parts and service manuals

Well I guess I should have pushed 2 and not 3. I assumed that 1 and 2
were sales lines.

At the menu prompts I pushed 3 then 5 then 3 then 2 then 1 and got the
zip blockage. They all seemed like logical choices.

Once I got tech support she told me with in 30 seconds that the drive
laser was out of line and needed to be realigned and I would have to RMA
it. Apparently it will erase disks like that but it needs a more precise
alignment to format the disks. SO.... I was given another Canadian phone
number to call. And guess what, it lead me right back to the woman I was
speaking to all of the time above, getting these phone numbers.

So I have to RMA the drive and I will be with out it for a MINIMUM of 2
weeks. They have no advanced RMA and this woman acted like I was an
idiot for thinking they might. I don't know if I will bother looking for
something that is suitable to package it in and shipping it. I can get
a LG burner for under 60 bucks and a lot less aggravation then dealing
with Pioneer anymore.
