Hi Everyone,

As far as picture quality goes, can anyone tell me whether the Region
1 version (NTSC) of The Simpsons DVDs would be preferable to the local
(PAL) release?

Obviously, PAL versions are normally preferable for DVDs (resolution
wise), however I have read in various places that for TV shows from
video sources you should stick with the 'native' format (ie. NTSC for
American shows). Is this true? I assume that the fact that the show is
animated makes no difference so long as it is a video source.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick.

Forgive the sarcastic tone BUT are you really worried about the picture
quality of a second rate TV cartoon? I could understand the question in
regards to a feature film but a TV cartoon?

Just buy the cheapest and enjoy it.

I cannot answer technically the merits over a NTSC DVD from video vs. a NTSC
to pal DVD transfer, suffice to say have you ever noticed any problems
watching the Simpson's on PAL TV? Actually I would hazard a guess and
suggest that as it is animation it is probably done at 24 frames a second on
film (why make more frames) there fore the NTSC get a telecine transfer
(i.e. repeated frames and possible jagging of the image in pans) where as
pal would simply get the 4% shift in speed to bring it up to the 25fps.
Therefore the NTSC would be a worse transfer than the PAL....Caveat Emptier!
Unless of course we get a PAL conversion of a telecined NTSC DVD. This is
probably unlikely as it would be easier to do the video conversion for both
formats from the film stock once rather than introduce possible transfer
problems from NTSC to PAL.

The Simpsons is most certainly NOT "second-rate"..

On the earlier episodes of the Simpsons the animation is too poor for it to make
much difference, so I would go with the NTSC version because 60hz is easier on
the eyes.

If you want secondrate, go to www.secondrate.org
The Simpsons is one of the defining tv shows of my generation.

The second rate was for emphasis in describing the video quality not the
content. Homer is one of my role models. I believe with enough alcohol
abuse I could be just like him ;o}

As far as picture quality goes, the R1 review at www.dvdfile.com suggests
that it is on par with the R4 version reviewed at www.dvd.net.au. And yes,
they are identically featured.
