Interesting article about fanfic in The Age today.

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/01/02/1072908900255.html

They talk about slashfic (homoerotic fanfic) and how most of it is
written by women.

It occured to me that the reason so many women write slashfic is that
most of the characters in the usual source material are male, and
women like to write about relationships - hence slash.

Any other thoughts?

cheers

I'm not entirely sure it is possible,
in this day and age, to explain Anne Rice.

I was in a book shop yesterday, and was
astounded to see the sheer, overwhealming
number of Vampire Chronicles tomes - even seeming
to crowd out the Star Wars/Star Trek novels.

I think one was even called 'Blood Farm'.

I suspect Anne Rice died many years ago,
and a computer is, somewhere, churning out poor,
homo-erotic tales of vampires in poorly researched
historical settings, cobbled from the collected works of
Mills and Boon-esque romances.

Or so it seems to me - though I gave up at Tale of the
Body Theif, and only finished that because I hate to let a book
beat me.

as a good female friend and avid slasher told me a while back (mainly
on why it was homoerotic fanfic she read) "it's porn from a safe
distance... you don't have to identify with any of the characters"

she also explained that she had given up on "hetfic" such as
mulder-scully pairings because the female characters always ended up
pregnant, getting married and settling down.

It all seemed like a reasonable explaination to me.

RAX.

that was Blackwood Farm, still a homoerotic book, but more Bisexual than
homo. surprisingly it wasn't that bad a book, I was giving up with the
individual vampire tales of the others, but this book brought me back into
the fold, so to speak. and I look forward to the inevitable sequel.

blood and gold is an older book, a sequel to marius's books, or something.
blood canticle is right

Writing about shagging is probably not generally considered "writing about
relationships" so much as "writing about relations".

Just a thought.

From the few that I've read, they seem to be more about the seduction
than the final action, and when they do get to the 'good bits', it's
not "Wham Bam, Thank You Mamm!" type sex, it's slow and draw out
erotica. Mills & Boon sex.

Perhaps it's a form of wish-fulfillment that men are capable of
sensuality [1] rather than just sex.

How about Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles as Slash Fiction?

Ah, if you've ever read any Trek slash, it's all about stuff like
McCoy agonising over whether to "sacrifice himself" when he and Spock
are stranded on a planet and Spock goes into Pon-Far!
