Are you concerned about Chinas environment? Do you want to do something
to help China fight with its environmental problems and preserve its natural
environment? Do you want to be linked to others with the same concerns
through a network. If so, welcome to the Professional Association for China's
Environment (PACE).
PACE is a non-profit and non-political organization registered in Washington,
D.C., U.S.A. on December, 1996. The primary goal of PACE is to create a
network for those who are concerned about China's environment. PACEs
activities will include building information and human resource databases,
providing environmental education and training, conducting environmental
research, organizing seminars and workshops, and publishing newsletters,
journals and books.
At the present, PACE has have members from various organizations ranging
from international organizations and fundations (e.g. the World Bank, UNEP,
WWF, and GEF), to research and academic institutes, and to the private
sector outside and inside China. PACE seeks an even broader representation
and coverage worldwide and cordially welcomes those (Chinese and non-Chinese)
who are interested in China's environmental issue to be its members.
PACE has set up an internet listserver for members to discuss China's
environmental issues and exchange the China-related information on
environmental problems, policies, research, business, and career.

1) Project Title:
Intelligent Knowledge-based Real-time Imaging: robust and parallel
image matching on distributed systems
Research Assistant Position (taxable salary approx HK$14,500 per
month for 1 year)
The project aims at developing a semantically integrated system in support
of automating the recognition of objects. It is to investigate and develop
a real-time image matching mechanism via parallelism on distributed memory
multi-computers at a low cost. Some feature extraction procedure, image
matching scheme and intelligent knowledge elements will be implemented.
The person in this post should hold an Honours or Master degree in
computer Science or Electronic Engineering. He/She will have strong
background in image processing and neural networks and will provide
valuable assistance to the research team such as proposing new research
ideas, implementing the system, programming assistance, analysing the
results and drafting research reports. The working knowledge of parallel
processing and distributed system will be of advantage.
This qualified candidate should have good programming skills and
familiar with C and Unix.

A new and well funded medical center for molecular biology at Sun Yat-Sen
University of medical science aims to be a leading research center in the
nation and to participate in world competition. To achieve this goal, the
center invites applications at the level of principle investigator (PI).
Research will be focused on cell growth control and regulation, and
related diseases at cellular and molecular levels. Successful applications
may have his/her primary appointment in the department and will join center
faculty with diverse interests in cell biology and molecular biology. Areas
of research emphasis include, but are not restricted to studies of signal
transduction, cell cycle regulation, oncogenesis, neuronal degeneration,
gene therapy, cellular infection by virus, apoptosis, molecular mechanism
of cellular response to growth factors, and cytokins, tumor progression and
metastasis, etc. Successful applicants will be expected to establish their
own research project, organize their own group. A strong start-up funding
up to RMB 500,000 Yuan, space and core-equipment resources have been
committed to these positions. Appropriate housing will be offered by
university. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or MD degree, at least one or
two years postdoctoral research experience, and a significant research
accomplishment. Part time PIs are also welcome. A qualified part time PI
must work in the center for minimum 2-3 months every year.

One or two postdoctoral positions will be available in the Helsinki
Institute of Physics in the field of particle theory and phenomenology.
The Institute, which is formed by merging the Research Institute for
High Energy Physics (SEFT) and the Research Institute for Theoretical
Physics (TFT), both from the University of Helsinki, and the Institute
of Particle Technology (HTI) from the Helsinki University of
Technology, will start full scale operations in the beginning of 1997.
The positions can start in September 1997 or even in the spring of 1997

This is a conference information about "the 120 anniversary of the first
Chinese people of learning in Germany-Berlin Academic Discussion". This
conference will be held in Berlin On Feb. 1st to 2nd.
Since 1896 Mr. Li Hong Zhang (in Qing Dynasty) sent his 7 people including
Mr. Bian Changshen to learn from German, There are 120 years past during
which a lot of Chinese people came to Germany to be majored in many subjects
including military, social and sciences ect. Those Chinese people have had
obtained a great success in their areas till now. Their great achievements
have made a giant influences on the developing of China including many
aspects such as military, politics, sciences, education, economics,
cultures and socialism.
Berlin, as the capital city of Germany, is an attractive place where the
Chinese people want to stay to learn. There were many famous big men who
once studied in Berlin such as, Sun Zhong Shan, Zhou En Lai, Zhu De, Kang
You Wei, Cai Yuan Pei, Qiao Guan Hua, Wang Bin Nan, Ji Xian Lin, Wang Gan
Chang, ect. At present there are the most of students in Berlin among that
in other city of Germany who are studying, working, or holding companies.
More and more students have finished their studies and gone back to mather
land to contribute their knowledges, meanwhile more and more newcomer
arrived in Berlin to start their new life of learning.
1996/97 is the year of 120 anniversary, and the year just meet the best time
of good relationship between Germany and China. We are going to take this

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
TOOLS is the major international conference and exhibition devoted to
the application of object-oriented technology. TOOLS Asia '97,
the twenty-fourth TOOLS International Conference and Exhibition, will
be run in Beijing, China. This will be the first time that a TOOLS
conference is held in Asia. TOOLS Asia '97 will continue the commitment
to excellence demonstrated by earlier conferences in Australia, Europe
and the U.S. Standards established for TOOLS by earlier conferences
in the series include:
* Dual emphases on both the practice of object-oriented technology
and its application in industrial environments, and the latest
advances in O-O theory and formal development.
* Solid technical program, based on a strict refereeing process
conducted by an international program committee comprised of both
academic and industry leaders.
* Balanced coverage of the wealth of approaches, trends and variants
in the object-oriented community.
* Combination of tutorials by international experts, up-to-date
exhibitions of products and services, invited talks by innovators
in the field, relevant panel discussions, and technical papers
targeted to industry practitioners.
In addition, TOOLS Asia '97 will be assisted by an advisory committee,
representing many senior researchers and developers in the field.
As with previous conferences, the TOOLS 24 Proceedings will be published

CALL FOR PAPERS
TOOLS Asia '97 is now soliciting papers on all aspects of
object-oriented technology. All submitted papers will be refereed
and judged not only according to standards of technical quality but
also on their usefulness to practitioners and applied researchers.
Theoretical and practical papers representing lessons of experience
on these topics are especially sought. A non-exhaustive list of
suggested topics include:
* Specification, development and application of O-O methods
and tools
* Testing techniques and tools
* O-O data models, persistence and databases
* Distributed Object technology (Corba, OpenDoc,
ActiveX/OLE, etc.)
* Business Objects
* Patterns, Libraries and Frameworks
* O-O languages and packages
* Formal semantics of O-O languages and data models
* O-O metrics
* Reports of experience with O-O technology
* Migration towards O-O software development
* O-O user interfaces
* Class management and evolution
* Empirical and field studies
* Production, distribution and revenue collection of
industrial-quality reusable components
* Standardisation and quality assurance of O-O components
* Re-engineering and reverse engineering of O-O systems
TOOLS 24 will feature workshops and panels on components, distributed
objects and emerging methodologies standards. Technical papers are
expressly sought in these areas.
Papers can be submitted in either of the following two categories:
* Regular papers (8-15 single spaced A4 pages): fully refereed,
complete paper accepted for international publication in the
proceedings.
* Short papers (4-8 single spaced A4 pages): fully refereed,
extended abstract published in the proceedings.

Five copies of each submission (in both categories) should be sent
to one of the Program Co-Chairs by April 25, 1997. Submissions
should be in English. Notification of acceptance will be mailed
