My HP M479fnw has flashed a message telling me that I need yellow toner.
The others are not far behind, so I figure on buying a set of toner
carts. Compatible carts are $138.00 for a set of 5. Pretty cheap. I
assume they have the requisite chips so that the printer will accept the
carts. A genuine HP set of (4) carts is (gulp) $724.44. I don't use a
lot of toner and whatever I buy will last a few years (I assume the
originals are approx 30% full when new).

My question relates to print quality. Anyone have any experience?

TIA

My recommendation is to get a laser B/W only

**First off: I have a cheap and nasty mono laser. The quality is
adequate for letters, labels and such, but the HP is needed for
everything else.

Secondly: The toner carts are loaded with approximately 500 pages of
toner in new printers. A new toner cart can be obtained with upwards of
6,000 pages of toner.

Lastly: I can't be bothered driving to Office works just to print
something. Most often, I want it printed immediately. My HP does the job
nicely.

Depends where you get the compatibles from. Some are good, some are less
than satisfactory. The other thing is you may come across an issue where
your printer detects the compatible cartridge and gives you an error
message. Generally you can go into settings on the printer and turn off
the warnings.

Chip failures on the compatibles are not unknown either which leaves you
with an almost full cartridge that is useless.

Print quality is generally okay. Colours may not be quite as accurate as
genuine though.

I have had reasonable success with compatibles from Aussie Toner.

**Your experience mirrors some of my own and what I've read elsewhere.
My need became somewhat urgent and I placed an order for a set of high
capacity, genuine carts. I fully expect that I will never need to buy
another cartridge. The cost of high capacity (roughly 4X) carts, is
around double the cost of regular carts. IME, I have found a slight to
significant print quality difference with compatible carts. The chip
thing concerned too. That and I've found HP support to be excellent.
