I want to install a 1TB hard drive in my laptop to replace the current 500GB
one.
These days computers don't come with installation disks so can I clone my
current 500GB drive onto the new drive and, if I can, which software can do
this?

TIA

Andy

Laptops particularly do usually come with some mechanism
to create recovery disks.

Yes.

Acronis True Image does that.

CloneZilla would have to be the most straightforward free cloner -
http://clonezilla.org/ - download the stand-alone ISO image
(http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php) and (depending on your
preferences and your laptop's boot preferences) set up a bootable CD or
flash drive.

If you're happy with having a two-partition drive, one with your original
500Gb image and the other created as an additional partition under Windows
after you boot, you're done.

If however you want a single 1Tb partition, you'll need to do a little more
work - download and burn (to CD) or flash (to flash drive) the Ultimate Boot
CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html), then boot to PartEd Magic
and use it to re-size your partition to take up all available space.

Operation should be relatively straightforward, but if you get stuck you
know where to find me :-)

Can Acronis and Clonezilla clone an active partition, drive?
I use Macrium Reflect, it can do it.

The one you are currently booted off you mean ?

Yes, TI can. It can also just use what they call the rescue CD
which is essentially just a linux live CD specially configured.

TI can even do it from within windows

Yes.
I meant cloning the boot drive while logged on to it.
I thought Acronis couldn't do it, but I take your word, if you say
otherwise.

Yes, TI can do that fine.
