I eat quite a few legs of lamb, prefer that form of roast myself.

But the one I got from Aldi, some scottish sounding name of the
meat supplier, was nothing even remotely like a normal leg of lamb.

Bet it was glued up out of bits of meat.

And I'm talking about the one with the normal bone in and shank.

Not the boneless one that they also sell.

The normal price is about what the other supermarkets do on special,
which also supports the theory that its glued up out of offcuts.

Lately over last year or so my Campbelltown ALDI meat is gristly!
But then not impressed with local butchers either
So far the best beef cut is blade steak but can't get Ox kidney?

> Lately over last year or so my Campbelltown ALDI meat is gristly!

Havent been game to try any yet apart from that leg of lamb and
one pack of chicken pieces which wasn't bad, but nothing special.
Too many bones for me, but I noticed yesterday they do have
another pack of boneless chicken bits. The whirlpool thread does
claim that the chicken can be well off at times tho so havent tried
one of those yet.

> But then not impressed with local butchers either

I havent used those for more than 50 years now, I use Coles
and Woolys. Don't use Woolys anymore for steak tho because
they now don't have a butcher anymore so they don't stock
the great slabs of steak still in the plastic that I can cut up
myself to get the thick steaks I require.

Aldi has had some eye fillet special buys but I don't like eye
fillet myself, too dry for me, I prefer scotch fillet or porterhouse
and the aldi ones look not thick enough anyway.

> So far the best beef cut is blade steak

What ? That's not a grilling steak.

I don't even bother with rump anymore.

> but can't get Ox kidney?

For steak and kidney pie presumably or
do you eat kidneys like that. I havent
eaten them for more than 55 years now.

Never tried those at all.

I've told you before since Halal slaughter the meat has gone tough
gristly bland dry. Become a mainly a fish chicken pork person

My understanding (as of 2017) is that there are now 8 abattoirs in
Australia with approval to conduct slaughter without prior stunning in
Australia.

A good deal in ALDI is the frozen lamb shanks (2) in red wine mint
($10)
They come with two sealed shanks (bag separated by scissors and put
one in freezer)
Cook low on gas in fry pan surround with onion spuds, carrots turn in
10 minutes should be ready in 30 minutes add some peas after 20
minutes.

Blade steak is good for casseroles, stew and of course (blade) "Steak"
and kidney pie.
Never tried sheep kidney always used ox.

See if Coles have Baxter's steak and kidney ($$) the tin has to be
opened with can opener (magican) by holding tin off bench (in air)
They just have a pastry top you bake in oven, not too bad but small
for $10 you need two and a beer.

Woolworth's stopped selling Baxter's steak and kidney (that's what the
cameras are for, if they see you buying something they stop selling
it)?

Aldi meat would be locally sourced, I would think. so if the local
butchers meat is bad, Aldi's would probably be also

Mine hasn't. In spades with the steak.

> Become a mainly a fish chicken pork person

I don't bother with fish. Pork has been tasteless
for decades now except stuff like prosciutto, ham
and bacon etc and that certainly cant be halal.

Yeah, got one of those, havent tried it yet tho.

I was going to roast it but havent found the right sized ceramic
dish that is long enough yet that isnt much too big for just one.

Yep.

Pretty sure we had sheeps kidneys when I was a kid, not ox.

I do eat those Fray Bentos tinned steak and kidney pies.

I find the Fray Bentos ones just a little too big but eat the whole thing
anyway.

They don't use cameras, the checkouts keep track of what is sold which isnt
stolen.

Yes it is. And much better labelled than the meat from the butchers.

I bet those legs of lamb are glued together meat.

I just see if there is a simple test for that, buy another
and then turn it when there is a big queue all getting
the special buy stuff first thing on Saturday.

28 cm DEEP fry pan with lid is what I use
this one with removable handle
https://is.gd/4mSnDo
BUT needs a 28cm glass lid $25
http://accessories.flavorstone.com.au/#offerSelectionForm

The warranty is bullshit won't last much more than 12 months
The removable handle is a must
I make perfect pies with it
"frozen Puff Pastry" squares fit perfectly
spray with oil first (Aldi olive)
no need to cut four corners face up

put Aldi bacon (cut off rind) and dozen Aldi cage eggs, coarsely
chopped English parsley (generous I use 2 WW's bunches cut stems off)
3 onions fry cut bacon and onion together (gives better taste) then
mix with eggs

put pastry on top the corners "diagonal" to bottom pastry push those
corners down, then fold the "up" pastry corners over top pastry.
Sharp knife cut 3 vent hole in middle (3 to 4 inch slits)

LOW gas heat/flame with lid on cook 20/30 minutes, then remove lid,
put in pre-heated 180 C oven (top shelf) after 15 minutes turn 180
cook another 15 minutes cook another 15

Take out let cool a little return lid and handle have pie plate ready
tip upside down holding lid on, pie will fall into lid, put pie dish
over bottom of pie remove lid. Eat or freeze (cut first) keeps well.

When I use Stake stew as pie filling I cover with mashed potatoes as
top need 8 potatoes though if bit short of spuds I will cover with
pastry
My stew is 5oo gms blade S, onion, Heinz tomatoes soup, potatoes, can
of tomatoes Oxo cubes (6) carrots

You can use whatever filling you like I also make pork pies with pork
mince chives garlic etc.

A cheap 28 cm DEEP pan from Aldi ($20) is the same as a Flavorstone
but handle is not removable, but adds life to your Flavorstone if you
only use it for pie making as I do (Flavorstone lid fits Aldi pan
perfectly), rarley use oven on roasts

Guess it might be given that you buy from butchers.

Maybe some meat supplier has made them an
offer to good to refuse or something price wise.

Since I only buy meat from the supermarkets except
with the chicken from Steggles themselves, its quite
likely there isnt any local variation in the meat I buy.

disagree.

I only have electric frypans The very small one is still a bit big
for just the shank and its sauce. I do the veg differently to you,
I mostly do roast Desiree. Peel them, dip them in olive oil,
roast in the glass convection oven for about an hour at 200C

Frozen peas/corn/capsicum/onion mix in the microwave.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go.

My local Lenards retired with the mall tried to just up his rent.
I used to eat theirs for about 70% of the non steak and non pizza
dinners but the nearest Lenards is now Albury, Yass or Canberra
and it seems a bit silly to piss all that petrol against the wall even
if I only do that a few times a year. Which I can use the train for
$2.50 a time, it would piss the entire day against the wall even if the
schedules did work for out and back in one day, and they don't.

I'm planning to try making what I used to get at Lenards. Easy
enough with some like the kievs, but I never could get the
Pastelles anything like theirs and have tried making the
Baguettes yet.

So I need to try something different now too.

Yeah, I have had that happen with some stuff, the lemon and lime
marmalade, and the tomato and chilli relish. Both times its got me
off my arse to do my own which leaves what I used to buy for dead.

They did stop having the Kitchen Collection breadmix too but I
like my own mix of a couple of the Lauke breadmixes even better
so I stick with that now.

Not true with "Halal Certification" that is a complete scam all food
(with small list of exceptions) is halal any doubt saying "In the name
of Allah" ('bismillah') as stated in their Qur'an verse 6:118
Halal Certification is stating Allah and his Messenger are liars, the
Quran lies, not to be listened to!
"Halal Certifiers" are turning Halal food into a cursed one (Bid‘ah)
guaranteeing a fate worse than death "Qur'an verse 5:87"

Aldi chicken is ok.
The Aldi frozen sheep shank I like is mint and rosemary (I add extra
mint sauce though). not tried the others.

Yeah. Some did suggest that the leg of lamb might be horse
but the bone is normal size. Couldn't even be the leg of a
large dog, their bones are nothing like those of a lamb.

I meant a mix of peas/corn/capsicum and onion
pea sized cubes, what Heinz call their 'Golden Mix'
Lots in the whirlpool thread claim that they leave
it lying around outside the fridge out the back
and some of it stinks when you get it home.

I havent found that with ours tho.

They did have that special buy of those filo parcels a few weeks
ago, just after my lenards closed for the last time so I bought up
most of what mine had, 6 of those big yellow boxes full of them,
must be 175 of the parcels themselves. Fills an entire drawer of the
freezer when stripped of the packing and individually glad wrapped.
They will last me literally for years at at most a couple a week.
I couldn't find anymore last week.

Not according to devout Moslems who read Arabic and have read the
Qur'an Verse 5:5 very clearly states the food of Christian and Jew is
Halal
"Halal Certifification" makes Halal food cursed to all Moslems

Muslim scholars are dismayed at the exploitation of their faith
posting online excerpts from the Qur’an showing there is no need to
certify food as ‘halal’, because most food is already halal
(“everything is made for us by Allah”), with the exception of blood,
intoxicants (alcohol), forbidden animals such as pigs, already dead
animals or those that have died “of themselves”, carnivorous animals
and birds of prey.

Quran 5:5
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those
who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful
for them.

Quran 5:3
Prohibited for you are animals that die of themselves, blood, the meat
of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than God. (Animals that die of
themselves include those) strangled, struck with an object, fallen
from a height, gored, attacked by a wild animal - unless you save your
animal before it dies - and animals sacrificed on altars.

Quran 5:90
O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants (alcohol), gambling,
[sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining
arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you
may be successful.

Quran 16:115
He only prohibits for you dead animals, blood, the meat of pigs, and
food, which is dedicated to other than God. If one is forced (to eat
these), without being deliberate or malicious, then God is Forgiver,
Most Merciful.
(end)

Halal is about food cleanliness, purity and hygiene to meet with
Qur’anic teachings and the hadiths which were written 300 years after
the Qur’an.

Pity about the way it has to be killed to be halal.

Nar, they don't even have just peas and corn.

They have separate bags of frozen peas and corn but its
not worth farting around mixing them just to save 70c/KG
and I prefer the golden mix which has much more.

Not into the mixes with carrots.
Yeah, likely it is just some stores that fuck that up.
Yeah, I certainly got the first one just after it opened.
And its tomato and red wine.

Nope, they there were only allowed to eat some
animals and only those which had been killed
in a particular way and not those that had just
died without being killed by a person etc.

Those can't be halal certified, so it has
everything to do with being halal certified.

Halal certification involves certifying that it
was killed the way the koran says it has to
be with meat that can be eaten by moslems.

Even sillier than you usually manage with 457 visas alone.
I prefer wedges of iceberg lettuce or leaves off my own plants.
Yeah, still havent found the right sized ceramic
dish to use in the oven. Either too small or too big.
Do have one that's about right but its too shallow.

Yeah, I just find it more convenient to put stuff
like that in the glass convection oven with the roast
potato and put the ceramic thing in the dishwasher.

I actually have at least a dozen raw shanks in the
freezer from the ex legs of lamb and was planning
to do them in one of the slow cookers in winter
and might well do them the same way as the
aldi ones when I find the ceramic thing it fits.

I do have one of those midget electric frypans and lid too.

Yeah, can't have the dregs like you coming into their shop.

Much better to stop stocking those pies so the Coles brand isnt damaged.

See what you meant about the cameras, the checkout data doesn't tell
them that it was one the dregs that they don't want who bought them.

Sheikh Imam Tawhidi received a harsh reception in Lakema, a suburb

Tawhidi holds controversial views on Islam, calling for tough action

Islamists behave the same way wherever they are allowed to infest.
They share tips and tricks on how to cheat the infidel. One of these
tips is that infidels never want to believe the extent and cynicism of
the islamist hatred toward them and to the west and its people. If the
infidel is given a choice between fighting for the truth with an
islamist, or paying him compensation as "piss off" money, they will
always take the latter. Another is that their religion sanctions any
illegal activity.

Plenty disagree on that, claiming that they put the worst of the meat

This one wasn’t butterflied, it had the bone and shank still there.

I did tell Aldi HQ that they should have baskets when
I discovered that one store had them, but got no
response except the usual automatic response.

They said they were, anyway.

They did apparently change to entirely
transparent packaging of the meat so you

I havent been game to try a second one yet,
essentially because if it is glued up, that wouldn’t
have been a one off, it would be policy.

to cook that lamb :) I raise and butcher my own' lamb' and I can dry
age it as long as I want (usually 5 days). Then slow cook it in either

You don't put those aldi shanks with sauce in the oven itself,
you put them in a ceramic dish that goes in the oven.

The lenards stuff does go in a wire rack fine, but not those

You need a aluminum foil pan to fit over "wire rack"?
Also a video to show how to open a Fray Bentos Pie tin.

Not fit over so much as sit on. I do have some of those
but the right sized ones are as shallow as the ceramic
one and the ones that are deep enough are too large.

A ceramic one is just more aesthetically appealing,
easier to chuck in the dishwasher once its eaten,
and since I had at least a dozen more shanks in
the freezer to eat and will be buying more of the
Aldi ones when they show up, and a ceramic dish
of the right size is guaranteed to show up at the
garage sales for $2 or so, no rush.

I use a normal very large manual can opener
that has a handle you twist. Works fine.

He leaves the can on the benchtop. His problem is that that can
opener doesn't cut deeply enough so doesn't cut into the lid.

Mine cuts the lid fine.

I bought a number of can openers none worked on top of rim.
Problem solved with $2 reject shop version of a "Magican" can opener
