Athlon XP

1. More bang for buck. AMD prices are considerably cheaper.
2. Even though XP chip have slower clock speeds, it does more work per
cycle and has an increase in performace compared to P4. (a XP +1800 or
even a +1700 could easly out-perform a 2GHz P4)
3. The only problem with the XP's is overheating, but this can be solved
with a good fan.

I think the prices are now closer than you think. I mean AMD is a little
misleading with there product models.

EG: AMD XP 1800 is only 1.66ghz (not sure exactly). And P4 1.7ghz is
around a similar price.

I've got an Athlon XP.

Yes, it's faster and cheaper.

However, the heat issue is a major concern. Most heat sinks are noisy and
inadequate.

I actually damaged a chip by replacing a heatsink. Lucky the dealer replace
it for me.

The noise drive me insane, eventhough i have an 80mm fans running at 7.5volt
and two case fans.

Next time, I'll build a Pentium

Unless you want to overclock your chip

Hope this help

Athlon XP runs faster than P4-2G, but if the fan fails, bye bye Athlon
where the P4 survives. the system will slow to a crawl but the CPU
will survive.

Whats more important ?

The AMD 1600+ would crap on a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 let alone a 1800+

No dipshit, a similar clocked P4 does half of what an XP can do in one clock
cycle.

P4's are shit.

Hey there buddie.

AMD didn't go into as much trouble with power-management as P4. The speed
may be better, but something has to give way sooner or later. I'd say that
P4 would outlast an AMD. But if you're not planning to keep it that long,
go for it. PISSHEAD!!!!!

amd are cheaper but have more heat problems
p4's are a little dearer but not as much heat problems as amd
its your decision
