Just for anyone's interest....

If you are planning to move your data to a new computer and not fresh
install, be aware that if you use XP (haven't looked at Vista), you have to
UNINSTALL IE7 and IE8 before you move it because the repair install you have
to do after you move to the new machine makes it impossible for IE to work
at all afterwards. Yes, I know that sometimes the old machine dies and you
move the data without being able to uninstall a thing and there IS a way to
fix that which isn't too complicated but will take you the better part of an
hour to do. However, if you can uninstall first then problem averted.

Shouldn't even be an option!

If you have to move data from one computer to another, that would
suggest there was something wrong with the original computer. Why
would you want to copy system/program data from a bung machine to a
good one??

Clean install on the new machine should be the obvious solution. In
respect of IE, the only thing to copy across would be Favorites (and
then with some intrepeditation, and after some thorough scanning!).

Mindlessly silly!!!

Wrong, as always. Plenty just upgrade.

Because its a hell of a lot less farting around than a clean install.

Only for fools.

Rubbish.

Errr...your old 478 pin P4 worked so well for you in all these years that
you only decided to move it NOW to a newer machine but the old one still
works just fine. Happens all the time all over the place.

A totally unnecessary waste of time if your previous XP was going OK.

Hey Rod - we agree.

Exactly right. Did it myself, more than once on my own machines, too. BTW,
did you try out the newer Acronis product "True Image Workstation" with
"Universal Restore" on a Vista installation yet? I only found that one the
other day on their site and intend to try it out.

Yeah, me too. Thats the way I normally do upgrades. In fact I dont do
it any other way now with XP and later. I used to do clean installs with
98* just because that did speed things up considerably, but it doesnt
with XP and later.

No, I havent tried it yet, its on the list.

Yeah, and I've never seen a situation where it wasnt doing well.

My main machine has got a few quirks and I really should
do a clean install to check if that will fix the quirks, but I just
havent gotten around to doing it, essentially because its so
comprehensively configured that the effort isnt trivial, days of work.

True.

I prefer a decent single malt myself.

Gotta say I have. I even had a woman, on the weekend, who I returned an XP
computer to who had her entire XP wiped by a few trojans. She doesnt use
internet so decided she didnt need an antivirus BUT she brings work home on
a USB stick! Anyway, she complained, at work so they are going to pay for it
and get this - they have gotten rid of AVG free and installed Nortons 360
because there is not "I.T. person" at work so nobody bothers to check the
free AVG is updated daily. I told her I would be back before the end of the
year because of their choice of Nortons.... she reckoned the machines are
faster WITH Nortons installed than with AVG free. This knowledgeable woman
who knows better than me is the same one who didnt know how to install XP or
that she needed an antivirus and updates if she is going to bring work home.
Sigh....

Did you try JV16 first? I assume so but just in case. It made it easier for
me to get rid of all the IE8 and IE7 references I had to remove after moving
an XP with IE7 and then IE8 installed to a new setup after the computer
motherboard burned out. I still cant figure out why they do things like that
and there isnt anything you can do about uninstalling those two when the
computer is dead, prior to moving.

Yeah, I dont get many that stupid.

I'm sure it happens, particularly with severely infected systems that
someone has fucked up even more comprehensively trying to fix the
virus problem, but I havent actually come across any with XP, just with 9x.

Nar, because it wont be a registry problem.

I dont furiously install and uninstall stuff on that machine, do that on a test machine instead.

I've only just recently bothered with IE7 at all, because I was getting a problem with IE6.

> I still cant figure out why they do things like that

I assume its because they employ too many terminal fuckwits.

True.
