If am using a Hotel Wifi, what is the best way to hide the URLs I am
visiting from the hotel staff? Is a VPN the best way to do this?

It all depends on how clueful the hotel staff are, and how advanced their
equipment is.

Unless they're running a proxy server (be it transparent or forced), they'll
have no way of sniffing out what you're looking at without a packet
analyser - and even if they are using a proxy server, they'd have to have a
very keen interest in what you're doing to fumble through the logs.

Even assuming that they're really keen, really clueful and really
well-equipped, how are they going to determine that it was _you_ looking at
those URLs and not someone else connected to their WAP? They'll have the
DHCP address associated with the HTTP connection, they might (depending on
their equipment) be able to associate it with a MAC address, but then what?
Are they going to ask to see all of your equipment during your check-out to
see what the MAC address of your laptop/'phone/network card are?
