Today I had the server's help on the phone and an hour later the
laptop was cleared and wifi was working. Now I'll have to get really
serious about Apple on the one hand and W7 on the other. iPhone just
won't reach my network although it knows that the network is there.
Just won't let me JOIN.

W7 must have a fault in the Networking area. I am out of ideas for
this. Channels? Encryption? Cussedness? I can't system restore to
Vista can I? Oct 22 was the date I bought it.

I had the same problem.

I fixed it by resetting the 'Network Settings' on the iPhone.

My operating system however is XP Service pack #3 but it is certainly worth
a try!

What would it have to do with W7? Aren't you connecting to a WiFi router
rather than a W7 machine? Do you have the correct encryption and
password set on the iPhone?

W7 networks ONLY allow W7 machines. Blame M$ it is a feature of the OS.

Click Settings.
Click WiFi.
Turn off Ask to Join Networks.
Click Other in the Choose a Network list. (Ignore that it might have found
your network.)
Type in your network name.
Tap where it says None in the Security box. Click your security type. For
instance if you are using WEP, click WEP. (This is the key step).
Click Other Network to return to the previous screen.
Enter your password.
Click Join and you should be good to go.

BULLSHIT
W7 will network quite happily in a mixed environment with
any other SMB based Network OS - Vista, XP, 9x, Linux+Samba etc.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I have done all the reset buttons. Com, I have done that series of
buttons and been blocked every time - it's when I put the password in,
it isn't accepted and I get the message: unable to join name of my
net. I have been through the security settings also. I went to
Vodafone this morning for the 3rd time this week. I learn something
from each person or post. Vodafone thinks I should change the password
on the router. It is a Thomson TG 585 v 7. I have emailed them just
now because there is nothing on the site that works, for me, to change
the password. Quite right about W 7 - it's not that.

At this point, it sounds like they are clutching at straws.

> It is a Thomson TG 585 v 7.

I have a Thomson ST 585 v6. The wireless feature doesn't work on this particular
one. The ISP ended up sending a new one which worked.

You should at least be able to connect to your router from a connected PC or
laptop and access the router's menu system.

Dr Sir etc

The site I mean is the Thomson site: http://192.168.1.254/helpfiles/

It is helpful as a learning site but I still can't find a password
option. If you have iPhone this is what is happening:
settings/wifi/(then wait for your network name) click on it/ the
problem seems to strike here because I enter my IP and Subset Mask/
then there is nowhere to go. There is no save. I found the notes for
the Thomson and that enabled me to change the channel as someone
suggested. Telecom print out pages from: telecom.custhelp.com/ are
well detailed.

All I want for Christmas is for iphone to be wifi

Here is another episode: thomson site is 192.168.1.254

It does have a facility to change the password - click toolbox then
user management then change the password. Clicking on there it
obviously asks for present password which is where the problem lies. I
have put the modem through returning to factory defaults which may or
may not be useful. I have gone through printed papers I have. I have
found these settings:

Network name:
Network key (WEP/WPA key)
cdec481847824016b6d39409af822ed3blec97483681084c5edle001f0bdb745 -
could this be the password?
Key provided automatically (802.1x): 0
Network authentication type: WPAPSK
Data encryption Type:WPAPSK
Data encryption Type: TKIP
Connection Type: ESS
Key Index:

Do you think that the long string is the password?

I hope someone can help. By Tuesday I may get assistance. I am also
ringing the broadband help

Thanks

Er ... that isn't a site, per se. 192.168.1.254 is the IP address of the router
(for Thomson routers anyway).

Start by pointing your browser at 192.168.1.254
You should see the login page for the router presented as a web page. You can
also telnet to that IP address but let's leave that for now because using the
web interface is easier.

Now, can you log into the router first?

The defaults for the router's login are usually something like "admin" or
"administrator" with a default password like "password" or similar. The manual
for that router will tell you exactly what these are.

No. That is the encryption key used for WEP/WPA encryption when using wireless.

First of all, what wireless encryption does the iPhone support?

More than likely it supports all of them. These should be WEP, WPA and WPA-PSK.
Encryption types could be TKIP, AES, or TKIP+AES.

You also need to set the channel and SSID. The Thomson should support all of
this. The iPhone should too. What you need to do is set them both to the same
settings and values. The iPhone should then be able to connect to your router
when its within range.

The long string (64 characters) is what your iPhone needs to talk to the
router, try putting that in when the iPhone asks for the password

I have tried these steps but I can't enter my password - this is
hindering me considerably as I don't know it. I have tried 3 passwords
that I know of and which I use most of the time but other than that I
am stuck.

No hope.

Fuck WEP. Configure your router for WPA-PSK and set your own pre-shared key
(PSK). Also set the SSID and channel.

According to the data he posted, it is already set for WPA, all he needs
to do is to enter the 64 character string into the iPhone and it should work
