I have recently upgraded from Windows XP to Vista, and have several
unresolved issues from the upgrade process, which I hope somebody may be
able to assist me with

(1) Icons. I prefer to start my applications by clicking on an icon on the
desktop, rather than opening up the programs list from the start menu. With
Vista's rather oversized icons, my desktop becomes very cluttered in
accommodating my many applications. Is it possible to scale down the size of
the existing icons, whilst retaining the present screen resolution, or
alternatively can the existing icons be replaced by an alternative set of
smaller ones?

(2) Emails. I have saved all my emails from my old computer, onto a backup
CD, with the intention of transferring them to the new computer running
Vista.
In Windows XP, emails from another computer could be retrieved by changing
the storage location in Outlook Express to point to a file where the emails
to be loaded are located, and Outlook Express would load the emails. In
Vista, the storage file location can be changed, but Vista will only allow
the change to a file which is empty. How can I transfer my emails from
Windows XP into Vista?

.(3) Internet activity indicator In Windows XP there is an icon in the
notification area, consisting of two alternate flashing lights which
indicate activity on the dial-up internet connection. It allows the status
of the connection to be checked, and its absence indicates that the
connection has failed and needs to be redialled. I have not found an
equivalent in Vista, is there anything provided?

You want to look at using the taskbar. That doesnt require you to clear
the desktop so you can see the desktop and you can have a bigger taskbar
and have it auto hide as well, so its much more convenient than the desktop.

You use the import function in the file menu.

From memory its an option in the dialup setup.

Rod answered most of your questions but as to the one with the missing
internet indicator:

Right click on the taskbar, click properties then go to Notification Area.
In there will be the indicators you want. If there is no tick, then tick
them. If they are greyed out, then Explorer hasn't loaded properly and you
need to load the Task Manager and click on explorer, end task and then go to
the FILE menu in the task manager and then New Task and hit enter on it.
Type the word explorer in the run box that comes up and hit enter and
explorer will reload. Most of the time those greyed out things will come
back but sometimes you have to repeat it.
