If you use Android phone and Windows, the best you can do is install
"Your Phone" app on both phone and computer.

Not very clear what you want to do.

You want to send something by email to
a service that will produce a text on a
phone whose mobile number you supply ?

Why does it have to be by email ?

Yes.

Because it's easier to type on a full-sized keyboard
especially when the reply is long, and any attachments are on the
computer anyway.

No, mainly over Technicolor tech, and especially evilBay.

Thanx, I'll wait for a demo on youTube before I wade into the MSoft

So, you're wanting to send attachments as well as text?

If that's the real issue, and you have an Android phone, have you tried
https://messages.google.com/ ?

Does that work if your phone is in a different location to your computer?

Not free, but not a monthly fee either:
https://www.aussiesms.com.au/email-to-sms/
https://www.aussiesms.com.au/sms-prices/

Storm's getting bad again. Turning off systems. More info
later, maybe.

You could mean anywhere from a different room to a different planet, so
I suggest you just try it for yourself.

There's not really any way for me to try it. I could take my phone down to my car in the underground carpark, but then it wouldn't have any signal.

Sorry, I take that back. All I have to do is turn off WiFi on the phone, and that would be the same as if the phone is elsewhere.

It's approximately as difficult as falling off the proverbial log - but
it does need Windows 10 as a minimum.

I've been using it for years, the gotchas are that it doesn't do
multiple recipients well, and MMS' are a bit hit and miss.

I just installed it from the Play Store on the 'phone, installed it from
the MS shop on the peecee, followed the instructions to connect them -
they need to be on the same WiFi network to connect - and Bob was my
grand-uncle!

Cheers,
Gary B-)

Doesnt have to be by email, the mynetfone web site does that.

easy, get a whirlpool account.

There are other options if you're not devoted to using an email
gateway specifically, including all the web-based free SMS sites
like this one (search "send free SMS" or similar):
https://afreesms.com/freesms/

I've tried one of those before (that one, I think) and it worked to
one number once, but never again after that. I tried another number
one other time and it didn't even work the first time. But you can
give it a try and see, I didn't notice any spam messages sent to the
number associated with my attempt. Or maybe the telco automatically
blocked incoming messages because it did sent lots of spam?

Another option is to get a mobile broadband modem. The software or
web interface for these often includes a way to send and receive
text messages, so you just need a SIM and it works like a phone
(and the phone service is charged the same way of course). On Linux
you can use ModemManagerGUI to send text messages with AT-command
based USB modems even though the Windows software doesn't run (and
probably even if that software doesn't support the feature).

Install Google Messenger on your Android phone (may not work on Crapple)
and Messenger for Web from Google in your computer. Sends an SMS from
your computer through your 'phone. If 'phone is off, won't work.

Both free from Google.

Google Messenger (which I also recommended) does need to have an active
connection to the phone from the computer, if using the web version.

I use MightyText. there's a free and paid version. no need to use email.
just type your message and press send and it goes from your phone. syncs
texts with your phone. you can read incoming messages on the PC too.
