For US and Canadian Win 7 home Premium can be ordered for US$50. For
Aussies it is US$160.

See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx

You can check for yourself by clicking on change the country

Why would anyone want to pre-order before even seeing it?

Isn't it a bit like saying,
I don't care if it's absolute crap, I still want it!

It is also like buying a New Apartment off the Plan, you have
no real guarantee it is going to look and feel like the artists
Impression. And of the same quality as in the Brochure.

Due for a trip mid next year US/Can may pick a copy up when I'm there
at that sort of price.

Doesnt require identical pricing.

We dont have anything even remotely resembling anything like that.

Utterly mangled all over again.

you have been testing a beta version, it will NOT be the same as the
final release. You are a unpaid tester working for Microsoft.

why would you pay out extra to buy the professional version of W7, so
you can run XP, when XP already runs XP?

Now if only wine (Linux) would run everything I need, I would dump M$.

IMHO the march towards 64 bit is well under way. Support for XP (32 and 64
versions) will not continue for ever. Change to Win7 (or later) is coming.
I am running Vista64, Win7 64, Ubuntu 9.04 and XP 32. Some apps will not
run under these OSs. Vista64 is my host system and I use vmware
workstation, which I like. However I can see some people preferring a
bundled virtualization.

I will have no need for the Professional version, as I will probably stay
with vmware.

Ubuntu is extremely good and free. However, as you say, wine is not the
answer for all apps. And I still need to drop to the Unix-like terminal.
Until this is unnecessary, I suspect that Linux will not become mainstream.

Regards
Doug

The upgrade from vista to win7 is the sp1

WinMe was only a stop gap.

But there is no way in hell I'll ever use a M$ product until the
first service pack is released or 6 months which ever comes first.

I think when you download a copy there is a clause that requires your
computer enabled to give feedback.

The cheaper price pre-order upgrade offer available to the US, UK, Canada or
Japan is for a limited time only.
I have read that it will disappear once a certain number of copies have been
sold as per the asterisk on the linked page.
Apparently when the equivalent of a years retail Vista sales is reached it
finishes.
They will be giving away copies though to people who buy qualifying
computers with certain versions of Windows from now until the release of
Win7.
In the US and Canada the offer begins on June 26, 2009 and will continue
while supplies last, or until July 11, 2009, whichever comes first.
UK says The offer begins on 15th July, 2009 and will end on 9th August, 2009

Agreed RC1 is very good. Even if one wants to wait till SP1 before
installing, I would still buy a preorder at US$50 instead of US$160

The only exception here being vista, It took forever to release a
service pack, some were wondering if was ever going to happen. All I
ever read about vista was problem after problem, and then came the
compatibility issues. You would have to be pretty brave to say, we're
going to move our business onto the Vista/Office 2007 Platform.
