Should have mentioned that I use the slightly different product, Windows
Live Mail (with Win7 and an Asus laptop) and dont have the problem, so I am
thinking it must be somehow related to Windows Live Hotmail. (Please dont
bother with comments like change to X,Y, or Z client, because it ain't
going to happen :) )
Could be a keylogger (check for malware or virii) or it could be the keyboard. I
have a Logitech Bluetooth wireless mouse. Its very sluggish when it wakes up
from sleeping. It also chews through batteries like a nympho with a vibrator.
Not sure how to test with a wireless keyboard. Is it sluggish the first time you
type a character after leaving it idle for a few minutes? Is there any software
that comes with it to control it?

Doubt keylogger, it is a brand new machine with Kaspersky installed prior to
connecting to the internet. It's sluggish when replying only, regardless of
whether left idle or not, and no there is no obvious software although there
must of course be drivers. Its just odd that it only happens when replying
to Live Hotmail emails.
Yeah she had a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard previously with her old
computer. I spent about $2000 month on batteries. Never again.
I'm using rechargeables with mine. They just went again this morning. I
recharged and replaced them just over a week ago. Damn. They last longer in my
electric toothbrush.
Perhaps you could use the Kaspersky "pause protection" feature to test if
that is causing the problem.
That's if the Kaspersky version you are using includes a firewall or similar
hacking protection.
If you notice a difference you may need to configure Kaspersky for Hotmail.
There are lots of reasons I don't use Live Hotmail...
I'll just add another reason to my list
It's probably doing spell check as you type, to make your life
easier.
With Word, how can you tell? ;-)

WTF? Energizer Lithiums are about the most expensive
batteries at about $5ea, which makes 400 batteries per
month, or 13 per day. Somehow I think you are more full of
bullshit than a feedlot.
IME on both MS and Logitech wireless Kbd's & Mice, with
heavy use, they only need batteries replaced every 3 to 6
months, using the cheap bulk noname alkaline batteries from
BigW. I'd probably get better life from Duracells or
Energizers but no point really.

Have a look at the CPU usage,
while she`s in that program, as it`ll
be at 100% for sure!
Get her to use the web login instead.

Yeah, thats what I figure too, must be memory usage suddenly shoots up. I
have said if we cant find an answer here to try just using normal hotmail as
you suggest. But why would this problem exist? Why would CPU usage be so
high--its not as though she has multiple programs open. Its a brand new
computer with 4 gig memory--it cant all be used just reading the bloody mail
!!!!!
With Windows anything is possible. MS have probably added Stallman's kitchen
sink to it.
Right click on the task bar and open task manager from the menu that
pops up. Select processes, and see which one is using all the memory
LOL! Yeah, that's brilliant advice! You work in a help desk, don't you?
Like Windows Live Hotmail? No wonder it has memory problems! LOL!
