What's the difference between a POP and an IMAP account? My windows
emails progs want to configure my accounts as POP, but my iPad by
default wants to configure the same accounts as IMAP. ?? Is it ok to
have the same accounts configured both ways? does it not matter? thanks,

If Julia is the answer, then what was the stupid question?!

"Over the past four years, the Labor government has lifted the
debt ceiling four times, from $75 billion, to $200 billion, to
$250 billion and now $300 billion. On each occasion Treasurer
Wayne Swan has earnestly promised not to exceed the total debt
limit. But over the same period Labor has also produced the four
biggest Budget deficits on record, totalling $174 billion. In just
the last 12 months, Labors net debt projection for this current
financial year has blown out from $106.6 billion to $142.5billion,
a deterioration of one third. Net debt continues to rise next year
and the year after to a new peak of $145 billion, the highest on
record. This continues the record of Labor governments that have
increased net debt every year since 1990. With every increase in
debt as Labor raises the Commonwealth debt limit, so too does the
cost of servicing the new debt level rise. Net debt interest will
rise to $8.2 billion a year and each day we will be paying $22
million in interest alone on Labors debt."

POP takes the mail onto the device and it is deleted from the server
IMAP actually keeps a database of your mail on the server, so you can
take a copy from multiple devices.

It is logical to have the portable device configured as IMAP and the
home device configured as POP. You will want to download and store email
on the Windows computer(s) at home and delete the mail fromn the server.
Thats what POP does. IMAP, on the other hand, will leave the mail on the
server and access it as required. For a portable device (phone, tablet)
this is what you want. Bottom line, you can access your email on the go
with the iPad and, when you get home, download and store the emails.
Note that those emails downloaded to the WIndows computer, then deleted
from the server, will no longer be accessible from your iPad, only new ones.

Thanks. that explains it really well. I note that if a mail account is
configured as POP on the ipad it gives the option to still leave mail on
the server.

Thanks to all who replied.

One annoying aspect with the ipad mail program is that you cannot
prevent it downloading mail automatically, which means that you get all
the spam, since it has no spam filtering. And of course you cannot
browse downloaded emails without downloading new ones, unless you take
the trouble to switch off wi-fi before opening the email program. You
would think Apple would have thought of this problem, and given the
option to switch off automatic downloading of emails.

Yes, there is an option with POP to leave mail on the server. I always
set that to "delete mail on server after download" on home machines.
Otherwise it downloads the same emails over and over again.

With Thunderbird, look under;

Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings

It's an option that I can tick or untick as I so desire.

Forte Agent has the same setting. I know this because I just checked to
verify since I use Agent 7 and it assumed the defaults from Agent 6 when
I upgraded.

settings- mail/contacts/calendars - account - push - turn off - fetch
to manually.

The thing not mentioned here as a difference between imap and pop is
that the changes are reflected on both devices. If you leave pop on home
computer then when you read on your phone it will be unread on the pc.
Also if you download something important on you pc you cant view it on
the phone.

Much better to use imap on both and set the phone to sync on the last
few days of emails. Just delete and archive regularly if you don't want
to leave emails on the server.
