Does anyone use Cyberdog for web browsing, ftp, etc? I have copied it from
the OS8 CD [as well as OpenDoc] but can not connect to the web with it. I
have changed my Internet Config settings of file, ftp, gopher, http, https to
CyberDog [in place of my usual Internet Explorer] but still the dog fails
to open. I am running a Performa 5400 with OS8.1, 56 m RAM. Any advice
most welcome, particularly setting up. I have only thought about using
CyberDog because I am fed up with the frequent crashing of IE.
Cheers

Hmmm, actually, it's been a while since I've used Cyberdog.

You state that you want to use it because IE keeps crashing? Is IE the only
thing that crashes on your system? Does it crash regularly? It just seems
strange to me that this happens as often as you imply, hence I am wondering
whether something else may actually be wrong?

And, what about Nestcape? I still believe that as a whole it is a more stable
package.

Anyway, good luck with using Cyberdog!!

Kind regards,

Joe.

Hi,

I prefer Cyberdog over IE and Netscape.

Try installing it from the CD rather than copying it. BTW, is a 5400 a
PowerPC? I think CyberDog only runs on a PPC.

Paul

Cyberdog can make use of MRJ if it's installed, via an MRJ OpenDoc part.
The OpenDoc part is only part of MRJ 1.5, not 2.0, however the 1.5 OpenDoc
part is said to work with MRJ 2.0.

Try checking the Cyberdog Resource Notebook:

http://xfiles.psyc.virginia.edu/~eric/cyberdog/crn.html

which is linked from the main (and unfortunately abandoned) Apple Cyberdog
website:

http://cyberdog.apple.com/

The CRN has info and suggestions on making the best use of Cyberdog and
fixing any problems you might have, such as getting MRJ to work.

Also, try:

news://cyberdog.apple.com/cyberdog.general

There's a good range of users on there - newbies right up to developers.

Yes, it's likely to be the web proxy settings (it doesn't handle automatic
configuration or authorised proxies).

It may be worth plugging in Kantara's Cyberdog web-browser update
(http://www.kantara.com/). It uses some Microsoft components, so if you
have IE already installed, you're halfway there. The replacement browser
(Blake) supports authorised proxies and some newer HTML specs.

Cyberdog is brilliant, but it's a different puppy to work with, compared
to IE & NN - the whole metaphor and method of working is different.

Thanks
I did install from the CD.
The 5400 is a PPC.

The inverse is true for me - Netscape crashes often, and MSIE works like
a charm...

Hi,

Make sure that you have OpenDoc stuff installed as Cyberdog is based on
OpenDoc.

I use it all the time. Try trashing and redoing your internet config
preferences, both Netscape and IE write corrupt them by writing stuff into
them. Keep a backup copy of your prefs when you've got them sorted. In the
Opendoc control panel, set your default document memory to 2048k (not 384k),
start at document open, stop at system shutdown. (If you look at the panel,
you'll see what I mean.)

With that, it should work no worries, I've used it on a 5400.

I'm pretty sure that you need to consider a couple of things for netscape
to work properly.

1. Use Nescape Navigator 4.0x - Browser Only version

2. Set your Netscape cache to point at a small RAM disk , rather than the HD

This is a virtually zero crash combination - we use this across LCIII,
LC630, Quadra 610, 6200/75, 5200, 5400 , 5500 , 7220/200, 7200/90 and
/120, 7600/200 , and G3 desktops , running either 7.5.5/OT 1.1.2 , 7.6.1
or 8.1 and I have no complaints of Netscape crashing so long as the
machine has sufficient physical RAM ( ~20 MB on a 68k or 32 MB on a
PowerPC ).

I can't find anything compelling about the current version of IE ...

Of course YMMV ....
