Hi Guys,

What format does an .avi movie burnt onto DVD (Lubuntu 11.10) have to be to
play on home tv through a DVD player?

Having trouble getting the DVD player to recognise this format.

At present the DVD (Blue Ray) player says "unable to recognise media".

If the file has to be converted, what is the best software for this?

As is usual, thanks in advance!

Hello,

Does your DVD player read MPEG4/AVI? It should be written on the front
panel...

It has to be in DVD format.

It first needs to be transcoded to DVD compatible MPEG format. Then a
DVD filesystem must be authored for it, complete with menus, if
desired. Then it must be burned to DVD with UFS filesystem support.

Some DVD players can recognise and play AVI files. But this is not
universal.

Use any decent video transcoder, such as ffmpeg (with non-free codecs
installed), mencoder, transcode..., to transcode to MPEG2. Use
dvdauthor, possibly with a GUI front end such as qdvdauthor, to create
the DVD filesystem structure. Then use your favourite DVD burning
application, eg. k3b, to burn it to the disc.
There are tutorials on all this on the Net. Search google.
