The keyboard is okay because it's XT/AT switchable, so all we need is
the 5-pin DIN/PS2 adaptor and we're away (currently $14.95 from DSE BTW).
However, the monitor could be a problem. It's a SAMSUNG Model SM-12SFA7
mono amber job, and quite nice to look at too (beats the trousers off an old
Sperry of similar vintage -- I think my old TRS-80 Model I would too :)
The monitor plugs into a full-length card that provides both VDU ("J2")
and PRN ("J3") ports, plus a 6-pin "J1" with bare legs which may have been
intended for another device, or just for jumpers(?). The card is fully
functional in the Cleveland, but we have no idea what it really is (I guess
my reference to "I/O" is not strictly true -- seems to be "O" only :-).
The card is about 13 7/16" (340 mm) over all, or 13 1/4" (337 mm) for the
actual laminate. Its only ID is "OK" on the component side and a serial
number label (6165/0687 [made in June 87?] ) on the solder side.
The biggest IC is labelled UM6845R/87095 and the other major ICs are
UM2301/8714S and V61C16P 15/8650. These are all soldered. There are
also two socketed ICs: both TMM41464P-12, but individually numbered
"JAPAN 8650ACA" and "JAPAN 8651ACA".
I guess we really want to know the best way to use the monitor on a new
mother-board which will probably have built-in VGA/SVGA services and a
female DB15 socket to match. Which suggests we'll need to run our old
monitor off the existing card with its DB9 socket, assuming this will
be possible simply by plugging it into the new mother-board. Alternatively,
we may need a new VDU card, but for that we really need to know what is
presently driving the thing, don't we? Maybe the monitor itself is quite
capable of being used in other mono modes anyway? (I'm wondering if what
we currently have is actually a Hercules card in fact?)
Please e-mail definitive answers to be sure I don't miss them as I shall
be off air for the next 9 or 10 days. (Post too of course, if you wish.)
It probably won't matter so much if I miss speculation ;-)
Thanks in anticipation of a solution,
Cheers, Ian S.
