Anyone know if optus are going to start to allow users to send sms
messages either from the phone itself or from computer and modem?

I hope so.

Although I've decided that I will be switching to the Telstra network the minute
my contract on my Nokia 1610 (with One.Tel) runs out and allows me.

just a tip, DON'T GO WITH OPTUS.. they're fulla shit.. i've been with
them for 10 months now and they pull too much shit. go with telstra
they may have a bad past record but they actually do give *service*
not just a friendly voice to abuse on the other line

optus may be cheaper but you end up getting less for what u pay for
than with telstra...

imho of course <G>

I recently had to send fault messages from a PABX network to a GSM
phone, we could send to Telstra phones via the "Redrock" service, we
could send to Voda GSM phones via their 0414 100 200 direct gateway,
but Optus could not provide a direct SMS messaging service.

We settled on the Voda solution, as we did not have to subscribe to
anything, and we could send messages for the timed cost of the
connection, (it was also a nice simple interface that we wrote a unix
script to operate with).

Regards, David.

Hutchinson Telecoms (which uses the Optus netowrk) runs a SMS paging
service that I've been using for a couple of week now. You are assigned
an e-mail address for the phone which will allow up to 5 messages of 160
characters to be buffered before being sent to an alternative e-mail
address. There is also a web page that will allow you to send messages
to the mobile as well.

They charge 57 cents per message which is more than RedRock but I don't
care...the service is integrated into the one bill and all :)

If international calling is not an issue you can send messages to many
networks through Cellnet's TAP dialup in the UK:

+44860980480

Free TAP s/w available on my URL below.

It will, if the SMS signalling gets through, which normally works
through any roaming agreement.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. I might have to download one of the packages and give
it a try.

Tried out Kevin's Cellnet software; it works for Telstra but not for
Optus...

Hutchison already have internet to SMS format of:
0411nnnn...@gsm.hutch.com.au
where xxxxxx is the six letter account code for the subscriber, however
the user must be connected through Hutch as their service provider

And while we're on the subject...
I was told that email to phones is "in the pipe line" but there's been
"no time frame" set. Very helpful.

Just got off the phone with Optus' Tele sales 1800 555000, they told me
that mobile originated SMS was going to happen around January next year?

From speaking with someone in the know at Optus I understand that they
are trialling the service now but are having problems with reliability
and with billing issues ie. how much to charge. They did not indicate
a time for release.

It would be great if one of the networks allowed SMS orginating to be
sent across networks (eg from Optus to say Telstra etc) instead of
this closed system they all like to have. I mean, collectively do all
your friends and associates deal with just one carrier? The answer is
of course no.
