Are there any plans to make it easier for people to keep their digital
mobile phone numbers when they change from one provider to another?

With Vodafone you can switch from one service provider to another and
keep your number. Both service providers need to sign an authority to
transfer number form. At least that's what I did, I changed from
Spectrum Global over to Vodac. Were no problems at all, I would have
been off air for half a day at the most.

I don't think the other networks have such a thing.

If any one has eighter of these please let me know.

Do you mean the 041x prefixes of the ranges withing them? On Optus, 0411
is generally a reseller, 0412 is Optus itself, and 0413 are the new optus
pre-paid SIMs. Within 0412, certain ranges (such as the 8xx xxx) may be
allocated to resellers as well. So if you know enough, you can even pick
which service provider the phone is on.

Yes, "Number Portability" for Mobile and eventually all services is
planned in Australia.

But don't hold your breath as the incumbent players will drag their feet
as much as they can to prevent them from "suffering" the increased
competition that this will eventually provide.

Sorry... typo. I meant WHILE on a contract. It can take some time to have the
transfer completed though, esp going from SP back to Telstra (sometimes months).

Crap. Every heard of sevice providers like UTC (United Telecommunications),
PacStar MobileEasy, Axicorp or Corptel? UTC, in particular, is large as all
connections made through Strathfield or Brisbane Car Sound are connected through
UTC.

In answer to the original question, yes, you can transfer from one MobileNet

service provider to another while not on a contract, and it doesn't cost you
anything. You get to keep your number. MobileNet actually transfered about 10%
of its AMPS database (RACE) to them about a year ago, which would make them one
of the largest SPs in Aust.... and you haven't heard of them Angus?....

Once again... (and this WILL be in the FAQ)

3.5 General

3.5.1 What numbers are allocated to who?

Currently the situation is this

0411, 0412, 0413 is Optus
0411 is normally a reseller, 0412 is Optus, 0413 are pre paid Sims. Some
numbers like 0412 8XX XXX are allocated to service providers.

0414, 0415, 0416 is Vodafone
Generally numbers above 0416 23XXXX are voicemail, 0415 is for analogue
conversions and numbers below 0414 23XXXX are reserved.

0417, 0418, 0419 is Telstra

I was told recently that there is also 0410 which is a telstra range
reserved for some as jet unreleased services.

This is obviously not a hard and fast rule as I have an 0412 8xxxxx

I believe Austel (ACA) gave Telstra a deadline of 1 June 1998 for landline
number portability.

0415 is currently being used to entice analogue users over. Don't know why
Vodafone weren't doing this 5 years ago ...

Crap yourself. MobileNet does have service providers - UTC for example.
Ring 13 16 21 if you don't believe me.

And customers can be transferred from UTC or any other service provider
back to MobileNet at no charge.

MobileNet service providers buy airtime off Telstra and have to provide
their own billing and 018 018 111 type services.

Telstra have 0417 and have been using it for about a year.
ie. 0417 334 108 is one of my Telstra numbers.

Telstra have allocated up to 0417 599 xxx at least by this stage.

0410 doesn't exist.

Bear in mind however, that your carrier and your PROVIDER could be two seperate things. your phone number gives no ondication of the provider.

For example, someone connected via Hutchison (who use Optus as their carrier) would have an 0411 or 0412 (Optus) number.

04101 and 04102 are allocated to AAPT. Whether they will actually use it is

Are there any other allocations apart from 0411/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 ???
