SIM card - no network connection but emails and Facebook Messenger download

Using an Aldi SIM (Telstra), which has no access outside Oz.
However (in Indonesia at present), when first turning on, my email
downloaded as well as any Facebook Messenger bits, which surprised me.
Galaxy S3.
Tried then to send SMS - "no network access" error message received.
Now same error message for all items, which of course is to be expected.
How come some things initially worked?
