Hi I'm looking downgrade to a smaller sized phone that will fit neatly into
my pocket. I just need minimal features - SMS and voice calls. No camera,
email, gprs, wap or anything like that.

I've looked at the SE T100 but a few reviews indicate that the keypad is a
bit of a pain to SMS on. I've owned a T610 and I quite like SE phones. A
good design would be nice but not essential.

I've got a budget of up to $400. I've also looked at the Motorolla V3 but
that's a bit out of my budget.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I have an old T100, been using it for the last two years. Works like a
charm (Dropped it a billion times, soaked it in the rain, even tied it
to my backpack while I was tramping through the NZ alps @ 6degrees -
Still worked :).

SMS is a breeze. If you turn T9 on (The word auto completion thing),
sending SMS is a snap, although the T100 has a hell of a lot less
functions than the 610 (Color screen, midi ringtones, blah blah) - For a
phone though it's a hell of a deal, you can pick new ones up from ebay
for around 40 bucks, although I think DSE was selling them for $49 as
vodafone pre-paid kits.

Good phone for just voice and SMS.

Thanks John for the reply.

I just have a few questions to ask you about your phone. Does it have any
reception problems? I've read some reviews and some have indicated a
weakness in that area. I know the T610 does have very bad reception
problems.

Thanks.

I've found the T100/T105 to have good reception, while I can still make
calls in an area with bad reception, a number of my friends phones drop out.

I pushed this to the limits when I was tramping in NZ, in most cases
when you are in the mountains there are no cells for a long way away,
but from a 1/2 up a peak I managed to a bar (if that) of reception to a
cell that must of been at least 30KM away to make a call home to
Australia to say G’day.

In comparison a friends Nokia (3315?) didn’t think there was anything
around.

I would go with a Nokia 3120, A decent phone, solid build, pretty small
and easy to use. Use can get then for $129 Virgin Pre-paid and $149
Optus-Pre-piad. If you msg me i'll unlock it for you if you chose to
buy it!

Check out the Nokia 1100. $89 at Dick Smith locked to Telstra, but shouldn't be hard to unlock.

On a community radio the other day I heard them talking on the Seniors
program (I was trying to escape the sport while eating) about mobile
phones provided by Vodaphone and Motorolla (or however it is spelt!)
which were basic phones for Seniors (oldies?) that don't includes
games, WAP, and all the other stuff most of us never use, but basically
only text messaging and the usual services to facilitate making calls.
These are meant to me marketed in the Third World, but are also
available in Australia. It said these basic mobiles were not
available through Telstra or Optus; but don't either of them provide
the basic infrastructure which all service providers use? A feature of
these mobile phones is also that the keypad is easier to use; however I
think that they are the size of the old analogue phones. Probably a
bigger phone is less easier to lose for a Senior -- remember, we will
all be old one day!

I assume they are talking about that Vodafone handset they offered recently
for $39 that was very simple to use
