I have a 20 year old Peugeot thats still going strong. In fact, Peugeot have
a huge reputation for making engines that go on for ever. There are many
examples of the model I have going around with over 400,000kms on them
without any form of engine rebuild...
Peugeot's generally don't have nearly as good build quality as german cars,
although the 307 and 607 have shown what a huge improvement has happened
since the 205 and 306.
I am a member of a Australian Peugeot club, and sure, some people have had
issues with their 1.6L 206, but no one makes all their cars perfectly - even
BMW and Mercedes get problems. One common thing seems to be the automatic
boxes in 1.6L 206 and 307 models. Everyone with this problem has since had
the software for the auto boxes updated for free by Peugeot and its all
fixed. The 2L in the 307 has been in the 306 and 406 for the past 8 or so
years (of course its mildly updated since then) so its a fairly proven
design.
I think you'd find the Peugeot a nicer car to have - Peugeot are famous for
their handling - drive a 307 through twisty mountain roads and you'll see
where it is significantly better than the VW. However, the VW should have
better fit and finish quality, and is a generally much less involving car.
Have you test driven both of them?

Also, the Golf is heavier, so no doubt the 307 should have much better
performance.

Actually the 2L (all alloy) in the 307 was NEVER used in the 306.
First appeared in the facelifted 406 and then the 206 Gti.
The 2L (iron block) used in the 306 and series 1 406 was a different engine
altogether.

The current 307 box is fine - in fact, the AL4 it uses physically is the
same as the 206. The 206 software update is basically the same as what
is currently being used in the 307 - it's a bit of a weird thing though,
it's very reluctant to unlock the torque converter.
You'll probably find the 307's gearbox odd initially, but you'll get
used to it. It does behave like a manual gearbox.

The 307 is nice to drive, and a very refined small car. It's roomier
than the Golf. Just test drive it.
Research the cars & test drive them now. I'm not sure about the Golf,
but you're looking at up to a 4-5month wait for automatic 307s in
particular colours (did I hear someone say silver?) We had to wait 2
months for our 1.6, and after 3000km, it's holding up well. The only
problems with it are minor - such as a sticking door handle and
misaligned interior trim.
The 307 is a more modern design than the Golf. Granted it doesn't have
the same fit & finish, but it's not a shabby car. Resale for both is
basically identical (and that's no bad thing). There must be something
good about it if it won European Car of the Year 2002 (even if some
writers aren't quite sure how that happened =)
Don't know about VW's figures, but Peugeot's 307 brochure weights are
about 100kg lighter than the owners' manual weights. The 307 is
certainly better equipped than the Golf.
Go for the Pug. The Golf is nice, very well build and engineered (I had a
MY2000 model once), but compared to the Pug it's slow and boring. The 307 is
very well equipped. And besides the waiting list for the 307 speaks for
itself...
These days Peugeots are quite reliable and have excellent resale value.
Cheers,
GB

That's one hell of a heavy owner's manual :)

Have you looked at the Golf GTI ?
132kW (5,500rpm) and 235Nm (1,950rpm).
Dead flat torque curve from 2000 to 5300rpm from the turbo.
And $38,500!
The 307 he's looking at is $31,490 - bit of a difference there.

You can look at the Alfa 147 but the Golf GTI looks better to drive....
22kW more power than the Alfa.
54nM more torque, and it comes in 2,000 RPM earlier.....
222km/h versus the Alfa's 208 top speed
0-100km/h in 7.9s versus the Alfa's 9.3
EU average fuel consumption 8.4 versus 8.9
Sure, the Alfa looks good...disappearing in the rear view mirror of the Golf
GTI !
Fritz
The trouble is.... the Golf (even the GTI) is not a avery rewarding drive.
Doesn't matter how much power you put under the bonnet.
Ohh, the GTi only has 110kw and 210Nm (just checked VW site)

I would go for the Alfa 147,but for mine it's problem like the Peugeot is
the factory does NOT have a office here in Australia.
VW is supported with factory distribution here in Oz,that would settle it
for me,don't forget you can also get the Renault Clio Sport for that sort of
money...

The Golf GTI does 0-100km/h in 8.5s. Not that much slower then tha 147.
